Many Americans, though, are simply running out of time. As of March, about 14 million people were unemployed and looking for work, according to the household survey. At the time the survey was done, about 8.5 million were receiving some kind of unemployment payments, according to the Labor Department’s Employment and Training Administration. That leaves about 5.5 million people unemployed without benefits, up 1.4 million from a year earlier.

In the coming months, hundreds of thousands more will drop off the unemployment rolls. The number of people using up their regular 26 weeks of unemployment payments peaked in August 2009 at nearly 800,000 a month. That means a lot of people should be hitting their 99-week limit right about now.

If you have sat on your butt for a couple of years and drawn ‘arm chair’ money, many employers may not even consider you unless you were actively looking for work and willing to take a lesser paying job. I know my son doesn’t, figures if you were to lazy to look for work, you are to lazy to work.
He puts in about 60/70 hrs a week.
As the 99ers fall off the government unemployment roles, in the hundreds of thousands each month, becoming UNCOUNTED unemployed.
And the official government unemployment rate [ U-3 ] improves ?
They just re-re-re-re-re-extended lazy-butt benefits for 26 months a couple of months ago.

People I know in HR departments are saying they are being absolutely flooded with resumes from people who have a 2 or 3 year gap since they last worked. Employers are very skeptical of hiring these people. Look for the Government to take a carrot-and-stick approach (tax credits for hiring these people, and a jackboot on your throat if we catch you not hiring them)
U3 is not connected to benefits. I don’t know why people never learn.
U3 is done by a phone poll asking if you’re working or not and if you’re looking for a job or not. If you’re not working and looking for a job, you are counted. Nothing to do with UI.
The unemployment extension is what kept the rate up. The government was paying people to not work. I know quite a few people working under the table while collecting Unemployment.
Why don’t you report their criminal behavior?

Hah, nice.. You guys are upset enough to complain that you ‘saw something’ like this (sure) just enough to complain on an anonymous chat board to make a political point. But, of course, that’s it.. Why bother actually doing anything about it.
A friend of mine can’t even get applicants for a truck driver job his company has. Good company, great benefits. No one will apply. Last guy came in, filled out his name and address then stated that he ‘didn’t need this sh!t’ and walked out. The local Employment Sec. Comm. says it’s a problem but nothing they can do about it. They don’t even have to prove they are looking for a job.
Our tax dollars being used for people to sit on their butts.

Good. Gaps in an employment record, particularly those not involving prison time, should not be barriers to employment. Pull that with a woman who had a child and end up with a lawsuit. This pariah mentality in HR must end. People who have had jobs don't need jobs like those who haven't.
