The Oakland police sergeant who led the investigation into the slaying of journalist Chauncey Bailey denied in court Tuesday that he had promised to protect the former leader of Your Black Muslim Bakery from criminal liability in the case.
Sgt. Derwin Longmire's comments came as the trial of Yusuf Bey IV, 25, the one-time head of the self-described black empowerment group, and a former bakery member drew near a close.
Alameda County prosecutor Melissa Krum referred to a conversation secretly recorded by police in 2007 in which Bey boasted to followers that his ties with Longmire were "the reason they didn't pin the (Bailey) murder on me." Bey said the homicide investigator was protecting him.
"Did you in fact tell him those things?" Krum asked Longmire, who is now a patrol supervisor.
"I did not," Longmire replied.
"Did you ever promise Mr. Bey that he would definitely not be charged with a crime?" Krum asked.
"No, ma'am," Longmire said.
Questions had centered on Longmire's friendship with Bey and whether it compromised the investigation into the August 2007 killing of Bailey, 57, who was working on stories about Your Black Muslim Bakery's financial and internal problems.
A former bakery handyman, Devaughndre Broussard, 23, has admitted to firing the shotgun blasts that killed Bailey as he walked to his job at the Oakland Post in the city's downtown.
Both Broussard and Bey were arrested the day after the killing, and Longmire left the men alone for a few minutes in a police interview room. A short time later, Broussard tearfully confessed to the killing, and for more than a year he was the only person charged in the case.

Someone should confront the Sgt. about associating with the Beys, a known Moorish Science Temple gang.
