TUSCALOOSA, Alabama Recent tornadoes ravaged immigrant and other low-income communities in the US state of Alabama, but undocumented aliens say they are reluctant to openly seek help out of fear of arrest and deportation.
Tornadoes left a wide swath of destruction through this university city, leaving at least 39 dead and several missing, and poorer neighborhoods such as Alberta and Holt, where many immigrants and African-Americans saw their homes left in splinters, were especially hard hit.
Illegal immigrants were keeping a low profile Sunday, but about 30 of them gathered at Holy Spirit Catholic Church for a Spanish-language noon mass and to receive donations from the community.
About 20 immigrants from Mexico and Guatemala whose homes were destroyed spent the night at the church on mattresses alongside tables piled high with donated clothes, shoes and food boxes. Children ran about as women discussed the tornado terror and how unlikely it was that anyone of them had survived.
Many more have come to the makeshift shelter to receive hot meals, only to return quickly to their damaged homes, in part to reduce their exposure in front of local authorities overseeing search and rescue operations and police who have set up checkpoints to ward off looters.
While Alabama officially claims only eight missing across the state, that figure could be considerably higher, given the hesitation of some immigrants to come forward for official assistance or to report missing loved ones.
"Many people are still missing out there," said Mexican-born Susana Ortiz, who was looking for her friend Ana Rodriguez.

Izaguirre said Mexican consular officials were set to arrive Monday in Tuscaloosa in an effort to provide assistance to Mexican immigrant residents.

Now would be a good time for them to move back to their home country.
Boo Frickin’ Hoo.
Don’t like it, then GTFO.
If they are wary of aid then they shouldn’t take it.
Seems simple to me.
One of the downsides of breaking the law, I guess.
Bus tickets back to Mexico?
If only there were a place that illegal aliens could go where they would feel safe from the authorities. But where?
Umm ... they aren't supposed to be here in the first place. OF COURSE, they should be afraid of arrest and deportation ... but I don't understand why. We've got the most illegal-invader-friendly administration the U.S. has ever seen. They don't have to worry about deportation ... heck, if they apply for aid, they will probably receive it faster than legal U.S. citizens!
What would happen to an illegal immigrant American or European caught in Mexico during a natural disaster?
What kind of assistance would the Mexican government provide an illegal immigrant in their country?
Be afraid, be very afraid.
Heh—look at posts 10 and 11...
This is bs.
The only acceptable assistance is that this Izaguirre comes with a truckload of money for America to pay for the damages wrought by these lawbreakers AND one way tickets to get the illegals back to their third world homes. They are criminals and Izaguirre ought to be thankful we haven't imprisoned these so-called "immigrant residents" from Mexico.
I would place the Bush 43 administration in the same league. They were just as bad.
40 million illegal aliens agree with you.
Electrician is now "a job Americans won't do"?!?
"Electrician" requires a license, (Electrical work is illegal to perform for hire without a license in all states; and including on your own property in several states.) which requires a lot of knowlege and training, and is not easy to obtain; and it pays damned good wages.
Illegals are not 'just here' illegally; they are breaking many other laws...but are rarely prosecuted for... as well in order to stay here, and work; laws which any of us WOULD be prosecuted for: Nearly always identity theft/fraud/forgery; usually driving without licenses/insurance/registration; often breaking health & safety codes regarding building occupancy and sanitation; very often theft by deception/omission of public welfare/medical services; typically have unreported (untaxed) cash incomes; many times fraudulently (under-)performing work (like this guy) that requires specific credentials & skills they don't have.
"Comprehensive Immigration Reform" MUST include a pathway for repatriation of every one of them, regardless of where they came from, rather than rewarding them for their lawlessness by moving them to 'the head of the line' over legal applicants for immigration and/or citizenship.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
The author managed to call them “undocumented aliens” and then “Illegal immigrants”
The term is ILLEGAL ALIENS
What’s Spanish for: “There are no tornadoes in Mexico”
