Politicians need to stay away from such disasters as all they can do is get in the way and consume resources that could otherwise be used to help the local residents.
True, but it's a "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" thing.
He can't do anything but get in the way or annoy people as they are still in search mode and emotionally wracked.
Bush could have gone and, in plane or helicopter, gotten a sense of situation. He would check with governors and then take appropriate action ASAP.
...and don’t forget the photo op....
