CBS's Bob Schieffer said Wednesday that Donald Trump is racist because he wants to see Barack Obama's college grades.
Such was told to Katie Couric on the "Evening News" (video follows with partial transcript and commentary):
BOB SCHIEFFER: I want to go on to what, to what Donald Trump said after he said this is out and everything. He said, “We need to at [Obama’s] grades and see if he was a good enough student to get into Harvard Law School.” That’s just code for saying he got into law school because he was black.
This is a ugly strain of racism that’s running through this whole thing. We can hope that that kind of comes to an end, too, but we’ll have to see.
To be sure, this is the kind of idiocy one expects from the shills on MSNBC, but the host of "Face the Nation" should know better than to get into the gutter this way.
PBS's Tavis Smiley said Tuesday that the upcoming presidential race is going to be the most racist in history.
This is a perfect example of just how right Smiley was because everything any opponent of Obama's says in the next eighteen-plus months will be deemed by some media member as racist.

I think I understand it now. if you are not convinced of anything Obama does, you’re a racist. So if Obama doesn’t duck his head and hits it getting on the helicopter, and you say under your breath he should have ducked, that means you’re a racist. Got it. What a strange world we live in

And columnist Michael Tomasky wrote for The Guardian Wednesday that the birther conspiracy “had to be the only explanation for how this black man got to the White House.” He added: “And if you think race isn’t what this is about at its core, ask yourself if there would even be a birther conspiracy if Barack Obama were white and named Bart Oberstar. If you think there would be, you are delusional.”
In a similar vein, Rev. Jesse Jackson told Politico yesterday that Donald Trump’s campaign to get Obama to release his birth certificate is deeply rooted in race.
“Any discussion of [Obama’s] birthplace is a code word,” Jackson said. “It calls upon ancient racial fears.” Jackson later added that, in his view, Trump “is now tapping into code-word fears that go far beyond a rational discourse.”
Birthers emphatically deny such criticism. But it’s difficult to apprehend the ongoing resistance to proof of Obama’s citizenship without crediting racial fear as a significant factor.
Mr. Schieffer maybe you are the racist for having such thoughts. We have been told that Obama has been the most intelligent President to ever hold the Office, next question would obviously be prove it. Anyone who would bring race up to block that answer must have that thought constantly in their head as a defense mechanism or something. Instead of being about race why can’t it be just about the facts.
Shieffer also said Clinton was in a “purple-faced rage” when he saw the dispostion Ken Starr made of him on video for the Lewinsky perjury.
In fact, there was nothing of the sort.
