Nevada Sen. John Ensign (R) plans to announce Friday he will resign his Senate seat, aides said Thursday.

Ensign has been under investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee over whether he violated Senate rules during his affair with Cindy Hampton, a former campaign aide. Hampton’s husband, Doug Hampton, was Ensign’s deputy chief of staff during most of the extramarital relationship.

I think there’s a lot more to this than meets the eye.

When Ensign inexplicably voted for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in January and then exited the chamber with a frown and without comment, I knew the jig was up. Somebody’s got something on Ensign, and it’s more than just this “extramarital affair” that everybody already knew about anyway.

This is the best news people of Nevada have had in a long time. His replacement will be the man now serving in the House, Heck, a doctor from Las Vegas and a real stand up Republican. This really is good news for Nevada and the rest of the country, we just canceled Harry Reids vote for two more years.

My first thought as well after the pro-sodomy vote. Now, we shall see if the GOP in Nevada can find a replacement who had balls enough to serve his/her country in uniform or if they’ll find another lawyer/politician, (i.e., a half asser).
