A man who burned a Koran in front of city centre shoppers in Carlisle is due to be sentenced.
Andrew Ryan, 32, took out a copy of the holy book from Carlisle library and then set it on fire with a lighter as a crowd gathered to hear his protests.
Police arrested Ryan, of Summerhill, Carlisle, shortly after the lunchtime incident in English Street on January 19.
He pleaded guilty to religiously aggravated harassment and theft at an earlier hearing.
Ryan was released on bail last month as the case was adjourned for pre-sentence reports.
Sentencing will take place at Carlisle Magistrates' Court.
The offences took place before the Home Office announced later the same day that controversial US pastor Terry Jones was barred from the UK.
The preacher sparked outrage when he announced plans by his Florida-based church to burn copies of the Koran to mark the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on America.
Earlier this month a top United Nations official blamed a Koran burning at Pastor Jones's Dove World Outreach Centre in March for violent protests in Afghanistan which killed a number of UN staff.
Burn a Bible and listen for the sound of crickets...
Meanwhile, the US Army confiscated and burned 100s of bibles in Afghanistan last year.
They were burned because that is their policy for disposing of trash, in the Army’s own explanation.
No Christians when wild, shooting and beheading anybody.
UK, yer guilty, how do ya plead?
Who was he harassing ?
Someone should inform these jokers that a book authored by satan was anything but ‘holy’.
Maybe the Lytham Express should get its facts straight before publishing an article.
Ok, I'm on it... Muslim Desecrates Bible in Pakistan to 'Avenge' Quran Burning
“holy book”, “holy city”, everything with them is holy... proper writing should be “a book considered holy by..”
A book that is evil isn’t holy. Get it right.

Bad move! It was not his personal property to burn! Always buy a koran in ARABIC to burn and claim you are destroying your own personal property!
Coming soon to a courthouse near you. Get ready, ladies and gentlemen.
So was he arrested for burning the fictional koran or burning in a public place?
I’d like to shred a bunch of korans, then drive by a cop and throw all of it out the window. I’d get a ticket for “unlawfully throwing, placing or scattering garbage” from a moving automobile, but the point would be made loud and clear to the whole world: even the American government knows the koran is garbage.
The only issue I can see is that he took the book from a public library.
I'm just wondering what the late fee is going to be................
Thus the problem. It wasn't his to burn. Were it his book, then I would have no problem with him doing this.
Some smart person in the UK needs to burn both the Bible and to Koran at the same time and see what happens...
How about a “National Burn a Koran Day”? Sounds good to me. Now, just what would be a good date? Easter or Christmas day or a non-religious day such as 4th of July?
We need a big, big cheap supply of korans.
How about a date when everyone will burn a koran or more?
Quit being so wishy washy.
P.S.
Ah yes. Don’t forget to pour pig fat over it first.
Someone should check out a bible from the same library and burn it in the same place, then see how law enforcement reacts.
Make sure the MSM is right there to record it, too.
