Radical Islamist groups gaining stranglehold in Egypt
The Telegraph ^ | 4/17/2011 | Damien McElroy, Cairo

The rapid spread of Muslim political parties ahead of September's parliamentary elections has strengthened fears that Egyptian democracy will be dominated by radical Islamic movements.

The Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's largest Islamic movement and the founder of Hamas, has set up a network of political parties around the country that eclipse the following of the middle class activists that overthrew the regime. On the extreme fringe of the Brotherhood, Islamic groups linked to al-Qeada are organising from the mosques to fill the vacuum left by the collapse of the dictatorship.

The military-led government already faces accusations that it is bowing to the surge in support for the Muslim movements, something that David Cameron warned of in February when he said Egyptian democracy would be strongly Islamic.

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, warned on Sunday that the direction of Egyptian politics was anti-Israeli. He told diplomats last week that Egyptian officials – including Nabil al-Arabi, the foreign minister – were pandering to political militants by branding Israel as the "enemy".

"I am very concerned over some of the voices we've been hearing from Egypt recently," Mr Netanyahu said. "I'm especially concerned over the current Egyptian foreign minster's statements."

An Egyptian court on Saturday disbanded the National Democratic Party, which won 80 per cent of seats in parliament in December's rigged election. Hosni Mubarak, the ousted president, and his protégés are under arrest and threatened by prison.

Mohammed Badie, the Muslim Brotherhood's spiritual leader, last week predicted the group's candidates would win 75 per cent of the seats it contested.

Fundamentalist factions have also emerged as parties. Gamaa al-Islamiya, an al-Qaeda linked group that promotes Salafist traditions has used its mosques as a political base for the first time since the 1970s.

Guess Obama will be able to hang up his “Mission Accomplished” sign soon. Everyone could see this coming.

Missed in all of this, but certainly not by moderate Arab leaders, is that if you expected this administration to back you up for your past cooperation with America and the West, you’re sadly mistaken.

Whoever follows Obama as president is going to have a very difficult time gaining the trust of Arab leaders after Obama has given them the finger.

This could be foreseen by anyone who took the trouble to look at the situation.

Obama’s agents and agitators played a role in setting it up.

Do the jerks in the news media really want this to happen? Why are people starting to comment now, when it’s far too late to change the situation? And why is Cameron, who now says he foresaw this happening, trying to bring about the same thing in Libya?

This is bad enough for us, but it will be far worse for Europe, which is right next door to what is happening, and even more reliant on Arab oil than we are.

"Egypt has many American M1 Abrahms, advanced tank shells and F-16’s."

This is why the military runs Egypt. They ban political parties as it suits them.

Can anyone truly say they are surprised at all by this?
Everyone here who was being honest saw this coming light years away.

re: Egyptian democracy will be dominated by radical Islamic movements

Well of course it will. This is a group of fanatics who consider themselves to be on a mission from their god, collateral damage and political correctness be damned. They have no consideration for anything or anyone that does not further their cause.

The sooner we learn that as a country, and begin to fight back in a manner that does more than make us feel good about ourselves the sooner we can begin to get a handle on the very real and present danger they are to our way of life.

We are engaged in a knock-down, drag out, no-holds-barred fight to the finish. And it's a religious war in every sense of the phrase. Problem is, only one side in the war knows it for what it really is and is fighting it to win. The other side keeps hoping to win through appeasement.

Let me demonstrate the outcome of this battle by using this snowball in my left hand and this blow torch in my right hand.

One day we will look back in wonderment at how blind we were to the dangers we were facing, and how we managed to vilify not those who presented the danger, but rather anyone who dared point it out.

One of my favorite quotes of Winston Churchill seems to have been uttered just for where we find ourselves in this battle:

“If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.”

Amen!

You wanted “change” America.

Wonder how many Israel supporters gave money to Obama in 2008.

I’m guessing the number would be startlingly high.
