ATLANTA (AP) -- Half the meat and poultry sold in the supermarket may be tainted with the staph germ, a new report suggests.
The new estimate is based on just 136 samples of beef, chicken, pork and turkey purchased from grocery stores in Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Flagstaff, Ariz. and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Proper cooking kills the germs, and federal health officials estimate staph accounts for less than 3 percent of foodborne illnesses, far less than more common bugs like salmonella and E. coli.

I wonder why as well. Perhaps the people doing the butchering are infecting the meat? I always wonder why when an article leaves out a crucial part of the story. That may just be me. Just a thought.
Think feces.
OMG!!!!!!
We need bigger government or we’re all gonna die!!!!!
...and unions...more better unions!!!!
Help us Pelosi...you’re our only hope.
ecoli comes from feces contamination, think people not washing their hands.
The others are probably transferred by people not washing surfaces and their hands properly.
Intentionally started by anti-meat leftist vegan lunatics, or just a major SNAFU?
Burgar Tartare, beeyotches.
When you see the employees at the processing plants, at least the chicken plants around here, it’s a wonder everyone doesn’t have Montezuma’s Revenge.
Ditto!
The same people who fail to understand the proper way to dispose of used toilet paper.
You can if you want to, but E. Coli and other "coliforms" are fecal flora, not Staphylococcus (staph)
If only Obama wasn’t so busy with wars and turning around the economy, he could save us from nasty beef. // sarc
And then cooked thoroughly (say... all the blood cooked out of it - yeah, that oughta kill 'em all) before being put on a plate.
But before any of that, a choice portion could be turned over to a priest to be sacrificed.
Oh wait...
Now I'll have to look into chickens and a hog too.
If this is true, it’s probably a bad idea to put steak on a black eye.
Do you do your own butchering, cutting and wrapping? That may be where the problem is.
Two weeks ago, my husband and I both got severe food poisoning. Lasted for five miserable days. I know it was the sirloin tips we ate. They were freshly bought from a butcher shop, and I’m a clean cook, so I don’t understand. It will be a while before I eat beef again.
Can't live without it, actually.
The meat packers staff their plants with illegal aliens from 3rd world countries. The plants are filty like the chit holes that the workers came from. Is there any wonder? Look at where the packing plants are located and who gets the jobs there. Part of the creeping problem that we have.
Doesn’t bother me.
I like germs on everything. Keeps one healthy.
