A Multnomah County jury awarded a 33-year-old woman $82,000 Thursday, saying they wanted to send Portland police a message: Hand over a business card the next time a citizen asks for one.

Several jurors who spoke to The Oregonian after the verdict in Multnomah County Circuit Court said police weren’t dealing with an urgent or dangerous situation on the evening of Feb. 13, 2009 — when Shei’Meka Newmann questioned what she thought was an unnecessarily rough arrest of a fellow MAX rider. It would have taken only a few seconds for an officer to hand Newmann a card, jurors said.   “I think that police need to be reminded that it’s part of their job to de-escalate and diffuse situations,” said juror Chris Bolles.   Instead, jurors say police overreacted to Newmann’s queries.

Hmm, I think I’ve met these cops, more than once.
Maybe it was their brothers since I’m not in Oregon.

No, I am not a member of the “But our cops are infallible, she’s just trying to cash in” kool-aid club.

I cannot PROVE that cops increased disdain for citizens/US vs THEM attitude is directly related to the so called “Patriot Act”, but I do feel that there is a correlation.
It was bad enough before PATRIOT ACT, but it’s clearly gotten worse, unless you are not a citizen, then you may be untouchable.

“A Multnomah County jury awarded a 33-year-old woman $82,000 Thursday, saying they wanted to send Portland police a message:”

but, who ultimately foots this bill? isn’t it the tax-payer who really pays for this?

Many have noticed the same thing - it’s was bad before but took a turn for the worse.

It comes first from the police department budget so the cop’s management will feel the pinch although ultimately the tax payer pays

“Cops are required to carry business cards?”

Strange (but understandable), though NYC was never as safe as when the cops used to cover their badge numbers with electrical tape.

Now it’s reverting back to the wild again...

Most of the cops in Everett, WA are real quick to grab the stick...or the Glock. Thats no exageration. I’m afraid of the police force up here. Afraid that I’m going to meet one thats having a bad day and get roughed up. Just the other day I was on the Swift bus at Everett Station and was chatting with the ticket checker. A Snohomish cop seemed to assume that I was giving her a bad time and came over to ‘see what the problem was’.

Take a look at this from 2009.

The only way to force citizens to care about the government they are supposed to be masters over is to hit them in the wallet. The police work for the voters so they are ultimately responsible.

I don’t know if cops are required to hand out business cards,But I would expect them to not put their hands on me if I ask for one.

“The jury found 10-2 that police committed battery against Newmann, and that she was falsely arrested and maliciously prosecuted.” Shouldn’t he be brought up on charges?

management just whines to the mayor who whines to the governor that property taxes need to be raised.

you’re damned if you do or don’t. either way, you’re gonna pay.
