Democrat stonewalling over Planned Parenthood funding leading toward gov’t shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 8, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The sole issue preventing Congress from agreeing on a budget bill and threatening to shut down the government is the GOP effort - and Democrats’ unwillingness - to end funding for abortion giant Planned Parenthood, Democratic party leaders have admitted.

While Democrats are blaming Republicans for the looming government shutdown, both Democrat leaders and President Obama initiated the arm-twisting this week by vowing to block GOP efforts to continue funding U.S. troops and other government employees.

Republican leaders in the House are battling increasing pressure to abandon plans to defund Planned Parenthood, the largest nationwide abortion provider. The GOP is spearheading the effort in the wake of recent stings by undercover pro-life journalists revealing a pattern of widespread cooperation with sex traffickers and statutory rapists at Planned Parenthood, as well as a burgeoning-out-of-control national deficit.

However, the pro-abortion establishment among the Democratic party has come out in full force against GOP efforts, with leaders such as Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) accusing the party of attacking “women’s health.”

“The only issue left was women’s health. This has been a moving target but now we’ve come to realize that the moving target is now focused on a bull’s eye on women in America,” Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid told reporters, as quoted by Reuters. Sens. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Claire McCaskill (D-MO) on Thursday also complained that the budget bill deal was being stalled by the Planned Parenthood issue.

While the senators blamed Republicans for “taking people’s paychecks away from them” over the ideological battle, GOP efforts to continue funding for the government have been blocked by Democrats. Although Congress has approved several short-term Continuing Resolutions (CR) this year, the compromises suddenly ended after the House earlier this week approved a bill that reinstated the Dornan amendment, a ban on taxpayer funding for abortions in the District of Columbia.

President Obama dismissed the short-term CR introduced Monday as a “distraction,” and specifically criticized Republicans attempts to cut funding for abortion, saying, “We don’t have time for games.”

On Friday morning, the Democrat strategy appeared to change as Reid announced that the Senate would present “our own short-term CR” maintaining current abortion spending. Politico reports that it is likely Reid will offer the House-passed short-term CR bill cutting the abortion funding alongside the new Senate version, which maintains abortion funding, before the government shuts down at midnight tonight.

The Dornan amendment has a history of bipartisan support: signed into law by President Bill Clinton several times, it was also approved by Barack Obama during his service as a Senator from Illinois twice, and signed by him while president in Fiscal Year 2009. Sources on Capitol Hill say that if the Senate acts on the House-approved CR that includes the Dornan amendment, the vote would be “very close.”

Possibly crucial votes have been pinpointed as Sens. Scott Brown of Massachusetts; Bob Casey of Pennsylvania; Kent Conrad of North Dakota; Tim Johnson of Illinois; Mark Kirk of Illinois; Mary Landrieu of Louisiana; Lisa Murkowski of Alaska; Ben Nelson of Nebraska; and Mark Pryor of Arkansas.

Obama, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi fiddling as shutdown looms.

Meanwhile, the House Republicans have a plan for Military (Department of Defense) to be funded for six months, and other options.

And the Lib Democrats are blaming Republicans...

Give the senate the bill and let them kill it or give it to Obama so he can veto it. Seems pretty simple.

Republicans have finally figured out that the way to destroy the Democratic party is to attack it’s patronage schemes, whereby it recycles taxpayer money into donations and support for the party. That is why the Democrats are fighting so hard to keep Planned Abortionhood.

Regardless of the shutdown threat what is going to happen on defunding PP? Seems to me if we can’t do it now, after all the explosive exposure of PP, it may never get done. Wish I had a crystall ball...well, only sort of.

Does this mean the Dims agreed to the EPA roll back? Not sure how much I trust the source here.

I think the Republicans are right to defund it and the dems are clearly in the wrong. Reid constantly claims that Boehner is held hostage by the tea party but it seems pretty obvious that Reid and Obama are the one’s being held hostage by the radical elements of their party when they’re willing to let soldier’s go without pay over planned parenthood funding. They need to send a bill to Reid/Obama that keeps the troops out of this and let the cards fall where they may. It’s high noon. Showdown time.

No!

There is a stop-gap funding for 6 months that only funds the Department of Defense so that the Military people can be paid during the shutdown.

The stop-gap plan is very limited, but keeps the DoD functioning until September.

The Liberal Media is confusing everyone with their mis-information...

I posted what was an attempt at humor earlier today...

It referred to Senator Reid and prostitution in Nevada (poking fun at him)...

Washington DC Dangerous Hot Air Advisory

Admittedly it was a vanity, but there are some news link in the thread...

Yours was an excellent vanity, topher. You have Sherlockian deduction ability.

I'd also like to add to our discussion the fact that the forked-tongued libs have also made it possible for the male soldiers in our ME wars to wear protective helmets on the arid battlefields or in fierce door-to-door fighting while the women military get the honor and privilege of wearing cheesy cotton Muslim table-runners on their heads so that none of the local religious fanatics or the enemy get "offended".

This lefty Democrat brainstorm is SO GOOD for the "health" of American womanhood......and SO GOOD for the "sensitivity" of those who would like to stone their women to death for showing an ankle.

I was not aware of the head gear info...

On a funny note, Wikipedia's entry on the Government Shutdown has the following:

This also is caused by a great debate over funding Planned Parenthood. Some have claimed that Planned parenthood performs abortions, contravening existing law which prohibits the use of federally allocated monies for abortion services. [4] Planned Parenthood also provides essential medical services, e.g. cancer screenings and testing for sexually transmitted diseases. [5]

This is from:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_shutdown

Wikipedia is a good propaganda site for the liberals... George Soros need to keep funding that project...

There was a pic on FR a number of days ago showing a couple or three U.S. female military in their camo uniforms, toting rifles, with the Muslim headgear on each of them. Perhaps the poster will see this and post the photo again.

The defenders of Planned Parenthood claim that the taxpayers' money is only going for mammograms, other screenings, etc. However, money is fungible....in that when the funds come in they can apply it to screenings and such, which just meams transferring existing funds into the abortion accounts.

They think we're saps and don't know this.

I'm so angry....all day the media including Fox has been accusing the Republicans of wanting a shut down just over being in a pique because of a "piddling" amount for "womens' health services"....and that's as far as the information to the viewers goes. Nothing at all about fungibility.

I finally turned off the tube.....right when Fox pulled Beck's special on Israel with all the inside and unreported stuff I was waiting to hear.......and then substituting for his show a gauntlet of several hours of the tedious Baier plus all the shut down hysteria.

That's when I shut down myself.

The radio just said the PP riders are out and the hold out is the money. Neither side is releasing a figure.

Got to wondering if the WON will swoop in at the last minute to impress the Independent voters and go for a deal after having hung Harry Reid out to dry and let Reid be seen as trying to gum up the works.

Part of my email from Priests for Life:

“You see, according to Abby Johnson — a former Planned Parenthood staffer and clinic director for eight years, as well as Planned Parenthood’s 2008 Employee of the Year — all the money Planned Parenthood receives is lumped into one pot. It isn’t separated or “set aside” in different accounts for specific services, as they insidiously claim.

They’re in the abortion business, plain and simple.”

There is this expose on Planned Parenthood.

Lila Rose is behind the expose (and her group). From LifeSiteNews.com

Mammograms? What mammograms? New video exposes Planned Parenthood ...

There is also another story, from a former director of Planned Parenthood that 98% of their funds go into a slush fund to pay for abortions. The former director is Abby Johnson, and she is from Texas...

That story is also from LifeSiteNews.com

Here is the Link:

Exposing the Planned Parenthood business model

There is also a Washington Times story about millions of dollars missing according to a GAO report.

I am having some Internet trouble, but I will post FreeRepublic links for some of those stories...
