A lot of what helped drag Europe out of the dark ages was the constant attempts by whatever emperor or king emerged in the various tribes of Europe to recreate Rome within their own kingdoms.
The Dark Ages Europeans may have read the Greeks, but they wanted Roman stability, Roman law and Roman economic strength.
