China has been using Enron style accounting to make it look like there economy is doing better then it is. They know when our economy tanks theirs will too.
So, they will build up a strong military in preparation for the coming collapse and we will pay for it.

“China won’t have to fire a shot, they’ll just buy out Taiwan.”

Then they better buy it soon, because China’s “wealth” is primarily in holding the debt of the US, and those notes will likely be worthless shortly.

As I understand it, Obama has ordered the nuclear weapons removed from our subs. Any Navy people out there that can comment?

Utterly and completely false.

The Tridents are still out there and armed with nuclear weapons, and initial studies are being done on their replacements.

Where on earth did you hear such a thing? The only thing remotely close to this is when all the tactical nuclear weapons were removed from the surface navy and attack submarines during the Bush Sr. administration.

The Chinese need a massive military

The Chinese military has been steadily shrinking in size for some time now; what has happened is their equipment has become much more modern.

Is this not the principal legacy of the Clinton presidency?

Well, it's overwhelmingly the legacy of the Russians, of course, with a good deal of French technology, and some Israeli.

On the U.S. side military sales to the PRC got going under Reagan, and the important sale was some torpedoes under Bush Sr.

“As I understand it, Obama has ordered the nuclear weapons removed from our subs”

I never heard that. I did see that some Tridents were converted to Seal buses.

“Where on earth did you hear such a thing?”

I read in an article posted on FR shortly after Obama had gotten into office that he had ordered all nuclear weapons removed from Navy submarines. What brought it to light, and to Congress, was a strongly worded diplomatic note from Japan. The note reminded the State Department that the US had a treaty obligation to provide Japan with a nuclear umbrella. I recall a WH spokesman shrugged and said, “Well, it is up to our allies whether we carry nuclear weapons or not.”

This was only a few months into the administration when unicorns, cherubs carrying laurels, and fairies fluttered around the White House. Now, the unicorns and cherubs have faded away and the fairies sit in the back of the West Wing coffee shop staring glumly into their Mochachino.

For some reason I wasn’t able to start a thread for this, but I’m sure posters on this thread would be interested in an email I just received:

“The whole world is afraid of China-made “black hearted goods”.

Can you differentiate which one is made in
Taiwan or China ?

If the first 3 digits of the barcode are 690, 691
or 692, the product is MADE IN CHINA.

471 is Made in Taiwan .

This is our right to know, but the government
and related departments never educate the
public, therefore we have to RESCUE
ourselves.

Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that
consumers do not prefer products “MADE IN
CHINA”, so they don’t show from which
country it is made.

However, you may now refer to the barcode -
remember if the first 3 digits are:

690-692 ... then it is MADE IN CHINA
00 - 09 ... USA & CANADA
30 - 37 ... FRANCE
40 - 44 ... GERMANY
471 ... Taiwan
49 ... JAPAN
50 ... UK

BUY USA & CANADIAN MADE by watching for “0” at the beginning of the number.
We need every boost we can get!”
