GOP introduces one-week stopgap with $12B in spending cuts

Republicans on Monday night introduced a measure to fund the military through September and government operations for one more week.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) told his conference about the legislation — which contains $12 billion in spending cuts — during a Monday night meeting, his office said. The move is intended to prevent a government shutdown that would start after Friday unless Congress approves another measure to fund the government.

TOPICS: Constitution/Conservatism; Government; News/Current Events; Politics/Elections
KEYWORDS: boehner; budget; cr; cuts; obama; reid; ryan; shutdown; trillions
The Three CRs would then total $31-$32 Billion in cuts?

If Boehner has the pair to walk in to today's meeting, drop this on the usurper's desk and say "We've taken care of Defense" sign this or shut the Government. Next week we are sending you the other $31 Billion in cuts from HR1.

You and the Senate can deal with that or shut the government.

Have a good day, and walk out...

Then he will have done a small bit to redeem his sorry self.

There has been no spending cuts only cuts in proposed spending. Not one government entity is getting one dime less. Shell game.

We're on the same page. If these people had a brain in their head they'd be announcing a $32 billion cut with the passage of every short-term continuing resolution.

There's more than one way to skin a cat.

absolutely correct, but this is the way the budget game is played. Right now FY 11 has to be dealt with due to the lack of a budget due to Democrat (communist) cowardice. fall.

Within the parameters of what is possible...the $61 billion in cuts from proposed spending plus some juicy policy riders is a win.

Does it accomplish anything meaningful towards true budget reform and deficit reduction. Not one damn bit.

But forcing the Dems to shut the government is a test of reserve and important positioning for future fights.

I have thought for awhile that the CRs are the one point of leverage the GOP has in the budget battle. Spending legislation has to originate in the House and so you make the CRs more painful than the alternative. 12B per week is much starker than the 4-6B for 2-3 weeks, so it looks like they are ratcheting up the pressure.

if they’re using CR as a tactic to increase spending cuts then thats fine. The problem a lot of ppl have is that there is too much distrust the GOP leadership in carrying out the goal

If they stick with 12B per week, or 24B per 2 weeks, then I think people will begin to trust them a little more.

I completely agree with you. That is why I framed it with the numbers and policy riders, and the original $61 billion as I did.

That said, I have no confidence that this scenario will be pursued. Just giving the devil the very last benefit of great doubt.

Would be wonderful to be surprised, but I ain’t gonna run out and buy ballons...

Republicans cave again. Is there no one to stand up for the people? Maybe Trump should start a third party and cut out all the BS.

Boehner is just Pelosi lite. I'm disgusted!

OK Obama, now we’re really mad. If you don’t agree to cuts by the time we count three, we’re shutting down the government.

1....2....2 1/2...2 3/4...2 7/8...2 15/16....2 31/32...
