CBS News ^ | March 23, 2011 | Sharyl Attkisson

Last night, a reporter from Univision asked President Obama about the subject of a CBS News investigation: allegations that ATF allowed traffickers to send weapons to Mexican drug cartels in an operation called "Fast and Furious." Insiders call the strategy letting guns "walk."

In response, the president said neither he nor Attorney General Eric Holder approved the operation.

and moreover, unaware of unintended consequences.

IMO, the number 1 screw up of liberals is unintended consequences. It's what they do best.

Pretty safe bet that this goes all the way to the top. Liberals are “top down” micro managers.

Remember how Carter was?

Do you remember that last ATF manufactured crisis. It happened near Waco, Texas.

[”. . . neither he nor Attorney General Eric Holder approved the operation...”]

Career bureaucrats are too cautious to launch an operation so fraught with potential disaster unless they have guarantees of legal protection from above—like a deputy attorney general or someone in the White House chief of staff office.

Question:

What is worse, selling arms to Iranian rebels and diverting the profits to support Contra rebels in Nicaragua, or supplying arms to Mexican drug cartels to track the routes taken in order to lead back to the cartel HQ?

The former led to the resignation of Secretary of State Caspar Weinberger and the firing of Adm. Poindexter and Col. North. It almost brought down a presidency.

What will the latter lead to?

That serious mistake is illustrative of Obama’s incompetence and must be used in National TV ads for the 2012 campaign!

IIRC, it’s just Congress right now – which shouldn’t surprise anyone.

Seems to me this calls for a special prosecutor, or whatever they’re calling it these days.

Mistake??! Here it comes, it was only a “mistake”.... not the intentional violation of laws.

Yes.

Otherwise what this means is that the top people that would be in the know and in charge of this apparently have no clue what’s going on underneath them - which is a HUGE terrible issue for THEM in terms of their incompetence and ability to manage stuff they are in charge of.

Serious mistake may have been made

Well duh!! The mistake of which the one speaks is the government getting caught effing over Constitutional law while attempting to build stats in order to restrict the second amendment. Arming an enemy of the US (Mexican drug cartels) should be cause for someone in this administration to be on the receiving end in a firing squad.

Just remember, the target of the operation was NOT a drug cartel, the supposed ‘cartel’ the Obama admin was after was the American firearms industry.
With that in mind, the actions of the administration and its cronies suddenly makes hideous sense.
They were hoping to build a ‘big case’ and shut down the firearms industry.

Slick would know what to do. Depends on the meaning of the word “approved”. Obama is clueless but he can always throw Holder under the bus.

Agreed, This needs to be investigated.

The most transparent administration ever should be leading the pack on this.
