Ronald Reagan is Americas most beloved president of recent years. We remember how he restored prosperity while ending the Cold War without getting us all nuked .
Its worth looking back on Reagans policy on involving U.S. troops in the quarrels and hatreds of the Middle East. In 1983, he committed U.S. Marines to Lebanon. On Oct. 23, a terrorist truck bomb blew up the troops barracks, killing 220 Marines and 21 other troops.
At first, Reagan insisted that he wouldnt cave in to the terrorist threat. Then he realized the best policy was to pull out the troops. Heres how he explained it in his autobiography:
Perhaps we didnt appreciate fully enough the depth of the hatred and the complexity of the problems that made the Middle East such a jungle. Perhaps the idea of a suicide car bomber committing mass murder to gain instant entry to Paradise was so foreign to our own values and consciousness that it did not create in us the concern for the marines safety that it should have.
In the weeks immediately after the bombing, I believed the last thing that we should do was turn tail and leave. Yet the irrationality of Middle Eastern politics forced us to rethink our policy there. If there would be some rethinking of policy before our men die, we would be a lot better off. If that policy had changed towards more of a neutral position and neutrality, those 241 marines would be alive today.
Reagans sensible policy neutral position and neutrality should be followed today . And troops now in Iraq should be brought home immediately. Almost 2,600 have been killed in Iraq, 10 times the number killed in Lebanon when Reagan decided to leave.
Reagan had to be diplomatic with his words. I don't; here's my policy:
"Radical Muslims killing Radical Muslims. Perfect. Our policy is to contain this to the Middle East, agitate it where we can and above all, DO NOT interrupt them."
Thanks for RR’s explanation of his decision to pull out of Lebanon. I did not know that (but often wondered what the 7734 was he thinking).
Impeach Barack Obama.
Also, when Reagan smacked Mo-mo, he smacked him hard and that was it, with a promise that if he didn’t sit down and eat his Pablum, he’d get another going over. (Bedtime for Bonzo reference).
