Obama vows Salvadoran aid, immigration reform: Visit cut short by Libya crisis

Making his first visit to Central America, President Obama brought promises of crime-fighting money and a vow to push the U.S. Congress to pass an immigration bill to aid El Salvador, a once war-torn country that has emerged as a stable democracy and a friendly ally.

In keeping with the other stops on his extended Latin American tour, Mr. Obama held up the tiny nation’s recent peaceful transition between political parties as a model for other nations looking to emerge from chaos or dictatorships.

“There are few better examples of both the opportunities and challenges facing the Americas today than here in El Salvador,” Mr. Obama said at a joint news conference with President Mauricio Funes, whom he commended for overcoming “old divisions” and showing that “progress comes through pragmatism and building consensus.”

The president also sought to reassure El Salvador - which has nearly 2 million of its citizens living in the U.S. - that he’s still committed to shepherding comprehensive immigration legislation through Congress, though he acknowledged the politics are tough.

“America is a nation of laws, and it is a nation of immigrants. And so our job is to create secure borders, to make sure that we’ve got a legal immigration system that is effective and is not frustrating for families, doesn’t divide families,” he said, citing declining Republican support for a bill that would lay out a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants....

He wants to encourage more illegal immigration to bolster his credentials among American liberals, and add to his vote totals in 2012. El Salvador could become a more peaceful place if their remaining gang members all emigrate to the United States. A win-win situation for El Salvador and for Obama.

I'm not sure if you intended your remark as sort of wry humor but Carter did hold the title of "nuclear engineer" (USN) at one time in his life......

From 1 March to 8 October, Carter was preparing to become the engineering officer for the nuclear power plant to be placed in USS Seawolf (SSN 575), one of the first submarines to operate on atomic power. He assisted in setting up training for the enlisted men who would serve on Seawolf. During this time his father became very sick and died in July 1953. After his father's death in 1953, Carter resigned from the Navy to return to Georgia to manage the family interests. Carter was honorably discharged on 9 October 1953 at Headquarters.......

Although it is subject for debate if he should be accorded the title of engineer.
It is a fact that James Earle Carter, Jr. has a lot more than layman's knowledge of nuclear reactors.

LOL! Well, it does demonstrate that Carter did exhibit a modicum of intelligence at one time in his life.....
Perhaps he got way too close to a reactor and it "cooked" what little bit of brain he ever had in the first place.
'cause he sure hasn't displayed a lot of intelligence in the years following his hitch in the Navy.
