(SALEM, Ore.) - Concealed Handgun Licenses (CHL) from other states would be recognized by Oregon officials under legislation adopted by the Oregon House of Representatives today. House Bill 2792 was adopted by the House on a vote of 40 to 17. The measure was drafted by State Representative Kim Thatcher (R-Keizer, Newberg, St. Paul)

“Your Second Amendment Right should not stop at the state border,” said Thatcher. “CHL holders in other states have taken the steps necessary to get these licenses. This legislation will be especially beneficial to those who travel out of state.”

"HB 2792 is an important bill that recognizes the respect Oregon has for law abiding gun owners who want to visit our state and feel safe,” said Kevin Starrett, Executive Director of Oregon Firearms Federation (OFF). “It also greatly expands the rights if Oregonians in other states. OFF is grateful for the hard work of Representative Thatcher and her staff to move this bill forward."

Mark Hiigel a Lieutenant Commander in the Coast Guard with roots in Representative Thatcher’s legislative district said “as an active duty military member, I've been stationed in many states over the course of my career. In each state I've had to obtain a new license to carry concealed. It will be helpful that those licenses will now be recognized by Oregon when I come home to visit my family."

“Oregon is one of only seven states that do not recognize concealed carry permits from other states,” said Rod Harder, Oregon consultant to the National Rifle Association. “With today's vote Oregon starts down the path to join over 30 other states that understand that people who go through the effort to obtain a Concealed Handgun License are honest law abiding citizens regardless of the requirements of each individual state. NRA thanks all those who voted for HB 2792 and we hope that the Oregon Senate takes prompt action to complete work on this bill and send it to the Governor.”

These laws have to be Federal. I should not have to worry if I drive to another state with my handgun in the glove compartment or in my hotel room, or on my person.

The headline hints at the possibility that Oregon is not part of the United States (which is true if you’re talking about the western part of the state).
