Pennsylvania Republicans Push Voter Photo ID Requirements

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) – Pennsylvania Republicans, who now control both the state House and Senate, have begun a new effort to require photo IDs for voters at polling places.

As the House state government committee held a hearing on a voter photo ID bill, the ranking Democrat on the panel, Philadelphia’s Babette Josephs, said with all of the major issues facing the state and the country, people may be especially energized to vote, “Now, it seems to me, is precisely the wrong time to start making it more difficult for people to vote.”

Delaware County Democrat Greg Vitali expressed fears that it would disenfranchise some voters, particularly in urban areas like Philadelphia, “Poor people, people who are not of the world of drivers licenses and credit cards.”

But a senior legal fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation, Hans von Spakovsky, cited a study by the Universities of Delaware and Nebraska-Lincoln, “At both the aggregate and individual levels they found that voter ID laws do not affect turnout, including across racial, ethnic and socioeconomic lines.”

Five years ago, when Republicans also had control of both chambers, a voter ID bill passed but was vetoed by then-Governor Rendell

“Now, it seems to me, is precisely the wrong time to start making it more difficult for people to vote multiple times.”

There--all fixed!

A few years back, were not more votes cast for Rendell in Philadelphia than there were actual registered voters?

Enforcing existing laws would be nice too. Think Black Panther intimidation at polling places. In addition, recall that in 2000, Philly precincts were allowing illegals to vote based upon District Justice (small claims court) orders saying they could vote. Voter fraud in Philly often overwhelms legit voting elsewhere in the Commonwealth.

This must get in place immediately. Then, a statewide cleansing of the voter registrations must take place.

The unions have registered the same voters in numerous precincts and they must be expunged.

The Democrats solution for everything from welfare, to driving, to getting healthcare, to buying a gun is a huge government program with an ID card.

Following their logic, it should get everyone to the polls, no?

Dems may leave the state over this. Cannot win a statewide election without the fraud in Philly.

The moral, don’t be poor. To be a citizen, work harder

That’s a canard, anyway.

If they’re poor, they still need an ID to cash their welfare check.

I home this goes through as I will be moving from the Peoples Republic of New Jersey to The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 2013 or sooner.

Let them leave. As a Pennsylvania taxpayer and voter I want the election fraud cleaned up in Philadelphia and voter ID is the first step. The Dem’s will naturally opppose anything cleaning up corruption as that is how they maintain power.

Setting aside for a moment the obvious arguments of invasion of privacy (or whatever it is this week .. ), I don't know a single soul that does not have ID of some kind, mostly a driver's licende.

And I don't know a single soul that would balk at showing it on election day.

Hell, kids can't wait to get their first photo ID from the DMV.

Solved by requiring the picture ID to show the person's address. If the ID address does not match the voter registration address, he does not vote.

Yeah. They will probable move to my state of New Jersey just before I leave for PA.

Amen! I am so tired of the fraud in Philly (and, to a lesser extent, Pittsburgh) determining elections.

EVERYBODY should be in favor of this type of rule. Voting is a privilege that is abused by illegals, people getting bussed in who have no interest in voting and the Democrats.

Democrats can’t win elections without lies, fraud and voter manipulation. If they told the truth during election cycles, we would have Republican majorities across the county, forcing the Republicans to stay conservative.

Nobody is being disenfranchised or scared from voting by photo ID laws other than cheats and dead people. We should go to a variation of the Iraqi system where every voter gets their finger inked to show they voted.
