Key Dem: Attacks on Libya 'because of oil'
By Michael O'Brien - 03/21/11 01:30 PM ET

The United States military action against Libya is motivated by a desire for affordable and accessible oil, a top Democrat on environmental issues said Monday.

Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.), the ranking member of the House Natural Resources Committee, said that he agreed with President Obama's decision to launch, along with allies, attacks against Libya and its leader, Moammar Gadhafi. But Markey said the attacks were primarily motivated by oil.

"We are in Libya because of oil," Markey said on MSNBC. "It all goes back to the 5 million barrels of oil we import from OPEC on a daily basis."

"I think all Americans know why the president made this strike," he said. "As long as no American soldiers are on the ground ... then I think it's a good decision for the president."

Political unrest in Libya and other Middle Eastern nations with high oil production contributed to higher prices per barrel of crude oil, which translates to higher energy costs — particularly in gasoline. (Oil was up to above $102/barrel as of midday trading on Monday.)

The increased energy prices led Obama to hold a press conference earlier this month in which he renewed calls for more production of renewable energy, and said he would consider opening the Strategic Petroleum Reserves if oil prices continued to rise.

Markey said the U.S. involvement in Libya "highlighted the need for the United States to have a renewable energy strategy going forward."

The Massachusetts Democrat also pointed to the ongoing nuclear crisis in Japan as a potential turning point in the debate over sources of energy. Markey said the U.S. should prohibit future construction of nuclear power plants in areas of high seismic activity, and work to fortify existing plants built on fault lines.

Skip the bombs and drill in the gulf...exactly - if we had access to adequate supplies of our own oil, all this foreign adventurism would be unnecessary - and we'd have cheaper gas and oil and a couple million more jobs on top of it - our economy would be roaring.......

Markey is yet another useless leftist tool my state has inflicted on the rest of you—I’d apologize, but I have never voted for him.

He is yet another liberal who behaves as a liberal always does, be it speech codes or multiculturalism—he lives in the world he WISHES were real, and ignores the actual reality the rest of us live in.

Renewable resources have been and always will be a priority for so many companies and individuals that when they are workable in such a way that they can deliver the energy resources we need to live our lives (and all that phrase encompases) then they will be adopted.

Ed Markey doesn’t live in a solar house or drive a car that runs on water, yet he gets up there and says “This is about oil.” My question to Ed is—AND...? He can’t seem to grasp what happens when people can’t afford oil, when companies throw people out of work, when people don’t have the money to be charitable and a thousand other things, and yet he doesn’t let any of this impact his thinking OR his lifestyle. He just proclaims “this is about oil” (which it is) and think, as all liberals do, that he is some straight shooter shocking the sheep-Americans (i.e. the rest of us) with The Truth, and he is thus saintly merely for SAYING these things. Thus he is NOT a hypocrite for living in this society, using oil like everyone else does...because he SAYS it’s bad.

The trick of it is, Markey knows he can SAY all this crap and get all the applause and credit while not doing one thing about solving our real needs with real (not wishful-thinking, not hopefully-someday) solutions, like drilling and using the resources we have right here.

No, because that’s living in the real world, where he would just have to be a regular person saying what all regular people say (”We have oil, we need oil, let’s use that oil”). He wouldn’t be a Speaker of the Truth (i.e. someone who pushes unrealized dreams and isn’t considered a charlatan, but a Good Person).

Never mind his pal Joe Kennedy’s annual purchasing of oil from Hugo Chavez, which is an abomination that NO ONE is paying attention to (funny how Bush was evil for owning an oil company in America, while Kennedy is praised for giving money to the vile Chavez).

But then, it all comes down to this: Markey, like kennedy, is a democrat, and that answers all questions as to why he gets away with spouting this crap.

“But none of the Libyan oil comes to the US.”

Excellent point and observation. In other words, why are we here? I know crap for brains said we have unique skill sets.
I guess that is code word for we have a capable military and we need to call them out to support some latte drinking Euro trash.

I am waiting for Soetoro to suggest this attack is Bush’s fault. Funny, the guy who deterred the navy from blasting the Somali pirates out of the water after attacking a US Flag vessel now orders up a full blown attack on a nation because the UN said he could. Memo to TOTUS, you are not the head of the UN, we take no orders from the UN. If you think otherwise, go back to Kenya where they perhaps do.

Really. Why are we there? Why Libya. Who cares but the people who live there? What is Barry thinking? This whole thing just freaks me out. I wasn’t all that keen on going into Iraq but it’s water under the bridge now, we have a whole new Charlie Fox on our hands now, thanks to some bizarro move by the Partier In Chief.

Shoulda killed Laffy Kadaffy two weeks ago and then moved on.

Screw Libya. I want to see IEDs in the streets of Tehran.

I’d love to know if any of these Massholes such as Markey, Kennedy, Lurch, etc., use oil to heat their homes in Mass.

‘”We are in Libya because of oil,” Markey said on MSNBC. “It all goes back to the 5 million barrels of oil we import from OPEC on a daily basis.”’

This asshat should be arrested immediately for treason. This quote directly provides a rallying cry, aid and comfort to the enemy. There is no doubt in my mind that American personnel will die as a result of this asinine statement.

I can’t believe that someone elected to Congress would be so stupid as to make that kind of remark. Sad times for our country.

“But none of the Libyan oil comes to the US.”

Actually that doesn’t matter. It’s a global market, any increase in global supply helps drive down global prices.

In other words, if France is getting Libyan oil, they’re not buying oil that might come here instead.

Ed Markey is a stupid card carrying communist asshole.

We're attacking Libya to get the muslim in chiefs approval ratings up, and he cant even do that right.

Meanwhile, the proce of gas continues to climb, and AQ will not be cutting us any deals if they succeed in throwing Khaddafi out.

As usual Markey is wrong, it is about the solar. Can you imagine a more suitable place for solar than Libya?

This is so stupid. Libya produces minimal oil. The reason it’s being bombed right now is to support the barbarian islamicists that want to take the country over.
