The boss of the company behind the devastated Japanese nuclear reactor today broke down in tears - as his country finally acknowledged the radiation spewing from the over-heating reactors and fuel rods was enough to kill some citizens

'In hindsight, we could have moved a little quicker in assessing the situation and coordinating all that information and provided it faster.'

Tough situation in Japan, just awful.

OMG! You mean that after a Quake and Tsunami that probably already killed more than 20,000 people, a couple more may die of radiation poisoning?

The horror!

Not so sure I buy the cabinet secretary’s excuse about not being able to forsee this. It is an older nuclear plant on a beach in a major earthquake zone. To be fair they had an 8 hour window to contain this when the plant was still on battery power and the cooling systems still worked.

The radiation now hitting the west coast is from the early leaks suffered by the Fukushima plant after the earthquake and tsunami last Friday, which actually occurred Thursday U.S. time. These leaks were minimal in comparison to the radiation emitted after explosions on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday tore apart the buildings housing the reactors.

In addition, the radiation currently being measured does not take into account radiation emitted by pools of deadly spent nuclear rods, which only began to emit serious amounts of radiation a few days ago.

We will not know the true level of the threat until the radiation particles emitted as a result of the three explosions that devastated Fukushima hits the west coast over the weekend and into Monday.

What? Your last statement would seem to indicate you don’t have the slightest idea what is involved.

Also, this *was* the 7th biggest earthquake in recorded history.

So it spends a week over the ocean. Wouldn’t this take care of the main danger?

This particular company has a record of falsifying safety inspection reports. "Saving face" trumps reality until reality bites you in the butt.

It it not just a matter of "a few people". Western agencies are saying that the company is still not forthcoming with the facts based on the data they have.

Right now, the possibility of burying the reactors as they did in Chernobyl is being discussed. If the happens, a significant land area of Japan will be unihabitable for decades and the death toll will be as higher.

“after a Quake and Tsunami that probably already killed more than 20,000 people, a couple more may die of radiation poisoning”

I feel for the families uncovering the thousands of bodies of the dead.

The media just can't get enough of the nuke plants. It's as if the 20,000 are yesterday's news and simply forgotten.

Sadly in Japan there has been a lot of corruption and coverups before the accident. The containment vessels may not be as sound as expected.

Wonderful to know our tax money goes to agencies like the Dept of Energy and Int Automic Energy Agency who essentially spend billions and do nothing. They should have had a SWAT team to get gas turbine generators to Japan to get those cooling pumps going by the second day. yeah it would be miving heaven and earth but the alternative is what is happening now.

Based on the crocodile tears - at least one fo the containment vessels must have been breached. I hope it is not the MOX one.

Never let another energy independence crisis got to waste.

I did read it. I’m curious what the real fun stuff is and what effect a week over the ocean would have on it.

Anyone know?

“Wouldn’t this take care of the main danger?”

Yes.
Slipping in the shower will be much more dangerous for West Coast residents than this would be.

Any danger to people in the US is non existent right now.

We all know that there will be some people affected in Japan and probably some deaths however.

Sounds a lot like how President Oblivious is being handled by the media and most of the pols in DC. So, while its easy to pee in someone else’s cheerios our day of reckoning is still to be. Perhaps the path of destruction Oblivious leaves in his wake will be worse than whats going on in Japan. In short we’re no better than they are.

Anyone know?

There is a live feed of the nuclear level in LA, it's very low, keep your eye on this if you want to, so far it's minscule (normal).
