It's a universal truth that dogs are man's best friend, but they're pretty darn loyal to their own as well. Case in point: this tear-inducing video, via the website Jezebel, showing a dog, shivering and disoriented, remaining loyally by the side of a stricken fellow canine amid the devastation of the Japanese tsunami.

You forgot the hanky alert!
I wonder if the dog understands Japanese or English? LOL
good doggie.
what a horrible week, month, 2 years, 4 years this has been.
I’m starting to get seriously depressed.
They understand it all :)
Please don’t be! I see this story as bittersweet at the worst, and uplifting at best.
I’m saddened this happened. I wonder if his humans are gone; died? But this dog and the other more hurt dog had each other after all the tragedy, and in the end, were resuced by the videographers. There’s got to be some happiness in that.
People say that they’re just animals, but after watching this, I think being an animal is not so bad. These dogs are doing good. Who inspired that? God’s creatures, great and small.
They sure do.A few years ago,we had a female German Shepherd and a gray tiger striped tomcat who became best friends.Ricki the Shepherd got lymphatic cancer and in spite of our vet’s treatments got sicker and sicker.Jake the cat stuck with her everywhere until she died. After she died,Jake slept on her bed for over a month and mourned her.
This is a moving story. Pets bring more to us than we realize.
Awesome story. Thank you.
thanks...I am on the doggie ping list...one of the most heartening aspects of Freeperdom.. loved the line about “being unleashed from it”..ha.
Sorry about your dog. I believe what you are saying about the cat. That’s great that they were so close like that.
A lesson for us humans.
Animals know how to take care of each other.
I think mankind has always underestimated our varmint counterparts. I hope the pet rescue folks are able to get in and help these homeless pets. They are in dire situations without help. Not at the expense of saving humans, before everbody piles on. I'd like to think we can save the people AND the pets they love.
So very sorry about your dog. That was indeed a true frienship among animals.
Death released her from her pain. She had a long productive life, spent a lot of time doing things she enjoyed.
You can tell by that thing around his neck that he belonged to somebody, definitely not a stray. No telling where their humans are. :( Dogs that have been handed treats, clean water, and yummy food in bowls don’t have much in the way of survival skills. I’m sure instincts kick in, like with humans. But it would be really hard for spoiled ones like mine.
Thanks for the ping.....A beautiful reminder that Dogs are a gift from God.....I know my Collie/Australian Shepherd is my best friend!
When I saw your name, I was sure you’d want to see this thread.
Thank you - beautiful post.
