Report: Radioactive material may have leaked from Japanese reactor

Tokyo (CNN) -- A mammoth earthquake and subsequent tsunami may have caused radioactive material to leak from an atomic power plant in northeast Japan, a major electric company said Saturday, according to a news agency report.

Citing the Tokyo Electric Power Co., Japan's Kyodo News Agency said that radioactive substances may have seeped out of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactors, about 160 miles (260 kilometers) north of Tokyo.

Meanwhile, potentially dangerous problems cooling radioactive material appear to have cropped up at another of the Tokyo Electric Power Company's nuclear plants.

Kyodo reported Saturday that the power company alerted authorities that the cooling system at three of the four units of its Fukushima Daini plant -- which is different from the Fukushima Daiichi reactors, albeit nearby in northeastern Japan in the Fukushima prefecture -- has also failed.

Temperatures of that plant's coolant water was hotter than 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit), the news agency said, an indication that the cooling system wasn't working.

That prompted Japanese authorities to add that plant to its emergency list, along with the Fukushima Daiichi plant, reports Kyodo. The news agency also reported Saturday that Japan's nuclear safety agency ordered the power company to release a valve in the Fukushima Daiichi plant's "No. 1" reactor, in order to release growing pressure.

This comes amid Kyodo's reports, citing the same Japanese agency, that radiation levels were 1,000 times above normal in the the control room of that facility's "No. 1" reactor.

Not to worry. According to Hillary some “really important coolant” was delivered by the US Air Force. I understand they loaded up a C-5 transport plane with jugs of anti-freeze and flew them in.

Is there no end to the incompetence of these people? Heaven help us if the US has a disastrous earthquake.

It’s a BWR. Radioactive gasses come out of it all the time. This is no problem.

Why did the coolant system fail?

Why was there not a back up system in case the coolant system failed?

The plant is literally right on the shore. The 30’ tsunami took out the emergency generators.

I hope that they have their potassium iodate tablets. We have 800 tabs just in case.

Live stream from NHK World here. The resolution is quite a bit lower than last night but, it's something for those without cable or cubicle bound. Double click the image to enlarge it.

“Is there no end to the incompetence of these people? Heaven help us if the US has a disastrous earthquake.”

We already got a glimpse of how Obama would react, with the oil spill. 52 days of lollygagging before taking action.

SECONDARY COOLING WATER!!!!!

Wait for details and do some homework regarding reactor design before moving on to panic.

Some time in the very early morning hours I heard a news report on the radio that stated that the nuclear plant WAS leaking.

All day there has been little confirmation of the truth about the nuke plant. I suspect that it was leaking but they didn’t report the details until they could get evacuations under way.

der Fuhrer Hussein 0bama will go on TV to re-assure the masses, and then go golfing. Don't expect anything more. You saw how he sprang into action during the Gulf oil spill.

The press is trying to whip up panic before people can come to their senses and be reasonable.

They would love for people to believe Fukushima will go the way of Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

There is a backup cooling system. Only the primary system has failed, and they are using the secondary.

After that, they still have the emergency cooling system. If it hasn’t blown up by now, chances are that they will get it down. It’s just going to take awhile.

What type of radiation is this? Is this Cesium? Cesium has a very short half life no?
Cesium concentrates in meat instead of bone if so.

Lastly, if anyone should know about the effects of radiation on humans it should be the Japanese.

I had a total thyroidectomy due to papillary thyroid cancer. I am also on Synthroid for the rest of my life. Would these pills be necessary for me to take?

How long till Obama orders the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to shut down every nuclear power plant in the country? Until they can be declared to be “safe” in the event of a tsunami.
