Chipotle workers quit ahead of immigration audits

(Reuters) - Workers have been leaving Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc in the nation's capital and Virginia since getting notice that U.S. immigration officials are auditing restaurants in the area.A survey of help-wanted websites, including Chipotle's own, shows a higher level of hiring in those markets than in others like Ohio, where the company has twice as many units.

Chipotle co-Chief Executive Monty Moran called the departures "very limited" and said they came after he told workers that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was reviewing worker eligibility documents at the chain's roughly 60 restaurants in Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Just a few months earlier, a similar audit resulted in the firing of 450 undocumented workers at the chain's Minnesota restaurants.

"Some people in those restaurants -- although it was very, very few -- decided to sort of opt out at that point or go look for another job. I guess I would suspect that their documents were probably ones that would be suspect," Moran said on a webcast from the Raymond James Institutional Investors Conference in Orlando on Tuesday.

Chipotle is a Wall Street darling, in part because its labor costs are lower than most of its peers'. It already has taken a margin hit from worker upheaval in Minnesota and investors worry that further disruptions could take a bigger bite out of profits

Chipotle at the same keeps their profits as Gov audits, I have not seen gov fine Chipotle one dime.

At the one near me, I have to point out the stuff I want in my burrito. The counter guys don’t speak enough English to get your order even close to right!

Why even patronize them then? We have to start applying pressure as consumers to folks who hire illegals by not doing business with them. That is my way of protesting, not that my paltry purchases matter in the grand scheme of things, but it makes me feel better.

IIRC, they offer 401k and healthcare.

Doesn’t sound like “jobs Americans refuse to do” to me.

Everyone knows that Spanish is the "language of the kitchen". Its all your fault you can't communicate with them in their domain. </sarc>

Looks like in the future there will be english speaking people to discontinue the need for pointing of fingers. For a matter of information does Chipotle require employees to undergo health screening ? I truly believe they knew they were hiring illegals.I also wonder if they do drug testing ?

I bet a search would reveal that they haven’t kicked in enough money as Democrat campaign contributions.

Send em all to Utah. Apparently Utah wants all illegals now.

REALITY—

We have millions of poor legal immigrants (Mexican, Central American and more) who will be very happy to work at Chipotle Grill. In this awful economy we have no need for illegal aliens except maybe a few out in the fields picking vegetables fruits etc

Chipotle is overpriced.
If they are hiring illegal invaders, they deserve to shut down.
There are PLENTY of places to take up the slack.

Maybe they'll have to pay a decent (or least a legal) wage to American workers now

*Send em all to Utah. Apparently Utah wants all illegals now.*

Kalifornia seems to have no problem allowing illegals in.
The people keep voting in pro-invader politicians.
There are a ton of sanctuary cities there. Their population is almost 50% Hispanic—how many of them are here illegally? How many are there and not reported?

Send them to The People's Republic of Kalifornia.
