Sorry, missed this. . .(and rereading) stopped at 'still feeling tremors' and did not realize it was you - the writer of announcement! Glad you are safe; and hope all others, safe too. Am watching 'morning' pics. Lots of people in the streets. Good grief; cars in water; and boats too; save they are damaged and many upside down and 'afloat'.

Have been watching; but busy; and mostly when I looked up; saw only people standing in streets and now; things not looking quite so good. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, I was just wondering about Okinawa myself, I think a Marine I know may still be down there. That’s a pretty good ways from where the fecal matter is hitting the oscillating air movement device.

Holy crap, 8.8 is about as big as they get. If it’s true, the ground should be all kinds of broken up. That’s when the ground ripples like waves on the sea. Must be some photos coming soon.

From Pacific Daily News Guam:

A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, following a 7.9 quake off the coast of Japan, according to the Office of Civil Defense Homeland Security.

Potential waves could hit the island as early as 7:09 p.m., according to Civil Defense.

The story is developing.

Ships are OK, the tsunami is a ripple at deep sea, I knew some folk that were scuba diving during the big tsunami. What I worry about are the Marshall Islands, Majuro, Kwajelein, Kosrae, Phonpei, Johnston, Guam, Truk, Yap, Saipan, Midway, etc. Those are low lying atolls, could be pretty bad.

I thought I heard that a tsunami travels underwater when way out....it’s when it hits shallower water that it rises...or unloads its “steam”

No problem. The ocean rises some but it is not a significant wave per say. The size of the wave dramatically increases as the energy comes ashore in the shallow water.

Program accepted, running!

Fortunately for me and my wife, we’re located in a very high area of West Tokyo, so we don’t have to worry about the Tama River, but Leftie-Lie-Spy might. Chofu is much closer.

I have the earthquake kit out now and am ready to evac if need be, but I think I will be OK.

EARTHQUAKE UPGRADED TO 8.9!!!

From Australia Broadcasting, 12 minutes ago:

Japan has issued its top tsunami warning after a major offshore quake measuring 8.8 hit on Friday, strongly swaying buildings in Tokyo and sending people fleeing into the streets.

The meteorological agency issued its top-level evacuation alerts for the entire Japanese coast, warning of a tsunami of up to six metres.

A four-metre tsunami has already engulfed parts of Kamaishi on Japan’s Pacific coast and residents have been ordered to rush to high ground.

“An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicentre within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours,” the agency said.

It also put the territories of Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, the Marshall Islands, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Micronesia and Hawaii under a lower tsunami watch.

The quake struck about 382 kilometres north-east of Tokyo at a depth of 10 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

Smoke could be seen rising from a building in Odaiba, a Tokyo suburb, and scores of cars are floating in Iwate prefecture harbour in northern Japan.

Police in Miyagi prefecture have reported numerous injuries.

Shinkansen bullet trains stopped when the quake struck, while the nuclear power plant in Miyagi prefecture stopped operating.

Power has been cut in Sendai city, where there are numerous reports of gas leaks.

Narita airport has temporarily closed and the runways are being inspected for damage.

The government has set up a crisis management team at the prime minister’s office.

Japan’s northeast Pacific coast, called Sanriku, has suffered from quakes and tsunamis in the past and a 7.2 quake struck on Wednesday.

In 1933 a magnitude 8.1 quake in the area killed more than 3,000 people. Last year fishing facilities were damaged after by a tsunami caused by a strong tremor in Chile.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world’s most seismically active areas. The country accounts for about 20 per cent of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.

Depends on which way the water is traveling. Is it in the line of any possible tsunami?

It’s apparently an 8.8 or 8.9... I can’t even imagine what that’s like. Prayers for everyone involved...

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!
CNN is showing another video of the tsunami as it roared inland. It keeps going and going and going across the landscape, full of houses and other debris it picked up!

Absolutely heartbreaking, knowing so many people were in the path.
