Former Kansas welfare worker says illegal immigrants abused the system
Kansas City Star ^ | Mar. 10, 2011 | - Steve Kraske

TOPEKA | A hearing on an Arizona-style immigration law drew impassioned testimony Thursday, including a statement from a former welfare worker who described “overwhelming” levels of fraud by illegal immigrants.

Lana Reed, who worked as a bilingual specialist for the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services in Overland Park from 2008 to 2010, urged lawmakers to adopt the bill targeting illegal immigration. She described a system overrun by illegal immigrants who used false Social Security numbers and other fraudulent documents to game the system.

“I witnessed overwhelming levels of fraud and corruption resulting in the waste of millions of taxpayer dollars,” Reed told the House Judiciary Committee. “Most of the fraud was conducted pursuant to policies of the SRS, which required employees to turn a blind eye to fraud and abuse.”

Bill Miskell, an SRS spokesman, said that Reed’s testimony was “new information” to him and that it would be evaluated today.

“We have protocols and procedures in place for caseworkers to follow, established by longstanding state and federal law,” he said. “We expect them to follow those protocols and practices and … if someone has evidence that that is not happening, we would want them to bring that to our attention.”

The bill, written by Rep. Lance Kinzer, an Olathe Republican, along with Secretary of State Kris Kobach, proposes ways to stem the waves of illegal immigrants who they say have flooded into Kansas in recent years.

Naw, you're good. I am in Kansas and I have stood behind people in the Wal Mart line with Vision Cards (food stamps) who then open a wallet or use a debit card for their other purchases. They don't speak English and when asked for ID they show Mexican drivers licenses.
It's all good. Except they drive cars I can't afford have cash in their wallets that I don't have. But I feel hospitable in knowing I helped feed and clothe them.
Fraud? New to them? They'll look into it? That's pathetic.

Wasn’t Sebelius governor of Kansas? On her watch?

Now she screwing up HHS, after screwing up Kansas.

Should have kept her down on the farm, locked up in a barn, tied to a stall.

An incredibly cynical statement crafted by a legal-minded bureaucrat. This was a complete lie designed to simply give the impression they want to root out corruption.

They do not.

I see the same thing. Big cart load of food, whipping out ebt card, I am getting enough to get by week to week, I to see them step into cars or trucks costing $ 20,000, $ 30,000. They get 20 people in one house, all collect welfare, etc, etc, they can live very well. I do not think people fully realize just how badly illegals are ripping us off and taking advantage of us.

Sadly, for a supposed red state, there is a lot of left over blue corruption that was only possible with a thoroughly corrupt press shielding it.
Sebelius was presented as a conservative here, believe it or not.

"Former Kansas welfare worker says illegal immigrants abused the system"

And in other breaking news, it's being reported that bears actually s*** in the woods!

Is anyone surprised with this "shocking" revelation? I hope something comes of it, but I'm not holding my breath.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

There is a guideline in the welfare system that says, you are allowed to possess a vehicle, clothes, material goods, household appliances and items, etc., but you can’t have more than (i think it’s) $2,500 in the bank in cash without impacting benefits.

So.......money is immediately spent on material goods...like big cars and $200 JimmyChoo shoes. And that is why some welfare recipients dress better and drive better cars than us working slobs putting money in the bank for our retirement and childrens’ education.

The welfare system is set up to keep people on welfare. It needs major reform, such as mandating savings and a set time for weaning out of the welfare system.

The bureaucrats get more people and more money for having more clients. They aren’t about to report fraud and abuse.

I wouldn't call 20 people in one house living very well. I would say 20 people in a house is a health hazard that needs to be shut down and the tenets evicted and deported for violating public health laws.

Your exactly right...I have spoken with a Welfare worker who said that they are required to handle a specific case load or their position is eleminated. So they certainly are not going to report any abuse.... One hand is feeding the other in this system and vice-versa.

You are 100% right. I know one guy wife 2 kids. He on purpose elected not to have renewal of his security guard license. Now he stays home with wife and kids, they are pulling in some good money from welfare, include they all get practically free health care through medicaid, very low copay on medications. He gets so much for free he remains unemployed for 4 years now.Doesn’t even bother looking for work.

Multiply this situation by millions and it is easy to see that the economy is close to collapse from the weight of government spending. The rats have put government spending on super steroids beyond the steroid level before they took powere.
