Senate OKs in-state tuition for illegal immigrants

The state Senate has given preliminary approval to a measure that allows illegal immigrants to qualify for in-state tuition at colleges and universities, overcoming the objections of some who said the proposal is too costly, violates federal law and will displace U.S. citizens.

The bill, called the Maryland DREAM Act, passed Wednesday evening after six hours of debate that spilled into a rare evening session. The Senate is expected to vote on final passage on Monday. Wednesday’s vote is a strong signal that the measure will be successful.

Strong emotions flared during the debate on both sides, with proponents arguing that educating a larger pool of residents ultimately benefits the state because they will have higher-paying jobs and contribute more to the tax base.

Sen. Paul G. Pinsky said the bill would give children the chance to “be more than part of the underground economy flipping burgers,” offering them the opportunity to become doctors, engineers and scientists.

The number of unemployed persons (13.7 million) and the unemployment rate (8.9 percent) changed little in February. The labor force was about unchanged over the month. The jobless rate was down by 0.9 percentage point since November 2010..The unemployment rate for college-educated workers is on the rise .

At the moment the "pie is fixed" so what the Democrats in Maryland want to do is cut out a slice or two and give it to somebody else.

The Ignance of the voters and their representatives in Maryland defies belief.

Here we go again ... I live in MD.

First, they are on the verge of passing gay marriage - which MORE than 70% of the residents are opposed to ...

NOW, they want to pass this crap - which 55%-60% oppose. This, at a time when MD has $33B [thats BILLION] in unfunded pension and healthcare benefit liabilities for state retirees [and you thought Wisconsin was bad] ...

So you live in Iowa and your son says he’d like to go somewhere beyond Iowa for college. You take Johnny Jr down to county seat and change his name to Jose Juarez. You drive him over to Maryland and dump him and a suitcase, with no paperwork or ID off at the college. They help him acquire a local ID, license, and give him in-state tuition (which you gladly mail him monthly checks to cover the greatly reduced amount). Four years later, he graduates but he changes his name back to the original name just as graduation occurs and gets his name on the certificate.

Total savings: $100k. Only in America...could an illegal get such a deal. No other country on the face of the Earth would offer such a deal.

BTW: Gay marriage is so opposed in MD that [if it passes], they will CERTAINLY be able to collect enough signatures to put it on referendum in 2012. We should get this “DREAM” act on referendum too ...

Only problem you have is your illegal act will get punished. You see you are an American. That is bad! You can not have the American dream. They will find out before graduation that your Juarez is really a Smith and make you pay back all of the tuition that you stole. Then they will strip your son of his graduation papers and throw him in jail. /sarc

Oh the irony of it all.......

Maryland once again re-earns the title of FREAK-state. All of should thank Maryland for making us feel better about states. Thank Maryland for mikulski, van hollen, hoyer, pi-louse-y and other notable life-losers. Maryland...the state of many laughs.

MD wants to be the follow-up CA!
Voters in MD deserve what they are going to get, since they keep electing CommieCrates despite normal, common sense logic indicating the opposite!

Recall any who voted in favor.

You don't understand - MD is bluer than the "Heart Of The Ocean" sapphire in "Titanic" ...

There are things that can [and probably will] be reversed by referendum - but when it comes to elections, the DEMs win 70%-80% of the seats ...

This is how BAD it is in MD ...

The State has MORE than $30B [BILLION] in unfunded pension liabilities for State retirees, NOT TO MENTION that the Counties are in the toilet too [Montogomery County alone is in the hole to the tune of $200 million].

AND, what is the BIGGEST thing on the State Assembly’s plate other than DREAM and gay marriage ???

WHY, a bill APPROVING dogs allowed to be brought into restaurants ...

Good, maybe Maryland will serve as a magnet for the millions of illegals occupying California. We would like to share the wealth.
