Carole Hankin, the superintendent of the Syosset Central School District, earns $506,322 a year more than the President of the United States. Her salary, paid for by taxpayers, is compensation for running a tiny school district comprised of 10 schools and 6,687 students.
Hankins total compensation package makes here the highest paid school superintendent in New York. By comparison, the head of New York Citys school system, with more than one million students, only makes $250,000 a year plus benefits.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo wants to put a cap on extravagant school superintendent salaries. Hes pushing legislation that would cap superintendent pay outside New York City at $179,000.
That move has sparked outrage among union leaders especially in Syosset.
Why is he treating her with the disrespect one would expect from an attorney general to an evil-doer, instead of the respect due to a valued public servant? union president Jeffrey Rozran told the New York Post.

Syosset is chock-full of rich kids and appears to get consistently good academic results. All the more reason to stop all taxpayer funds, privatize the entire district, and let the parents pay tuition. You’d think that the rich-hating liberals would jump at the chance to redistribute the wealth away from white folks...
Regardless, she’s not worth that much.
That is an obscene amount of taxpayer money being spent. I wish they’d publish salaries of public officials and school officials across the country and wake those that are still asleep to this robbery and motivate them to vote for and DEMAND fiscal responsibility.
“Regardless, shes not worth that much.”
Not of taxpayer money, no, but if a private school wanted to pay her that much, and she got the results to justify it, more power to them.
“Regardless, shes not worth that much.” And(NMP)Obummer is?
Talk about a waste of $400,000.00. Come on 2012!
How DARE they revealt his dirty little secret...what do you want a Labor War?
Not all Bell Californias are in the state, and not all bank robbers are in jail. At one time someone had the dirty pictures on someone.
This almighty greater than thou public servant bullsh!t is really starting to get old.
According to their website, they also seem to get some money from New York State:
"New York State gave Syosset School District $90,201 in state aid in 2010-2011 because of the District's efficient and prudent use of administrative resources."
Force the wealthy school district into total privatization and if the parents want to continue the stupidity of paying that much for a school executive who has responsibility over less than 1 million students, then by G-D let them, and let them pay for it all themselves.
THAT should be the state’s move, NOT dictating local school administrator’s salaries from the state capitol.
Relieving badly needed state funds from “aiding” this district that obviously does not need state aid, would leave more state funds for districts that could actually use some help.
Wow.
Syosset Ny is like “Real Housewives’’ of pick the city and Syosset is that on steriods.
If the school board thinks she is, your opinion shouldn't count for squat, unless you are a taxpayer in that district.
"Hankin, 68, a grandma of nine, lives in Purchase with her husband, Joseph, president of Westchester Community College. They also own an oceanfront mansion in Westhampton Beach, LI. Her friends include jewelry designer Judith Ripka, Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Westchester) and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
But, but she needs the money! Think of how high her annual plastic surgery bill must run!
I agree. This is between Dr. Hankin and the taxpayers of Syosset. Of course, I think the taxpayers of Syosset are a few fries short of a Happy Meal.
If she is 68 maybe she’s received a lot of step increases.
Many school supers in Texas are retiring to lock in their salaries and retirement. Legislature is questioning their high salaries.
