Two U.S. Airmen Killed in Shooting at Germany's Frankfurt Airport
foxnews ^ | 3-2-11 | Associated Press

Posted on 03/02/2011 12:01:15 PM PST by Mozilla

The attack came as the bus sat outside Terminal 2 at the airport, according to Frankfurt police spokesman Manfred Fuellhardt. The bus driver and a passenger were killed, and one person suffered serious wounds and another light injuries, he said.

A source tells Fox News that the shooter yelled "Allah Akbar" when opening fire on the U.S. military personnel. He then dropped his gun at the scene, ran into the terminal and was subdued.

U.S. Air Force Europe spokeswoman Maj. Beverly Mock said all four victims were airmen. They were all based at the Lakenheath military base in Britain.

A military official in Europe says the airmen were going to be deployed to either Iraq or Afghanistan.

President Obama said he was "saddened and outraged" by the shooting.

The president says the U.S. will spare no effort in finding out how the "outrageous" act took place and will ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. He called it a tragedy.

At the airport, taxi cab driver Salimi Seraidon said he was sitting at a stand about 200 yards away when the attack took place and said it was over quickly as police rushed onto the scene.

"We just heard the shots," he said.

Frankfurt Attack Draws White House Reaction

American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, March 2, 2011 – President Barack Obama pledged that the United States will work with German authorities to get to the bottom of a shooting outside Frankfurt International Airport in Germany today that claimed the lives of two U.S. airmen and wounded two others.

“I’m saddened and I am outraged by this attack that took the lives of two Americans and wounded two others,” he said. “I think the American people are united in expressing our gratitude for the service of those who were lost.”

The president added that he and First Lady Michelle Obama have the airmen’s families and friends in their thoughts and prayers, and are praying for a speedy recovery for those who were injured.

“I want everybody to understand that we will spare no effort in learning how this outrageous act took place,” the president said, “and in working with German authorities to ensure that all of the perpetrators are brought to justice.”

Obama called the incident “a stark reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices that our men and women in uniform are making all around the world to keep us safe, and the dangers that they face all around the globe.”

“So I think it’s fair to say that on behalf of the American people, we want to extend our deepest condolences to these families,” he added.

Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell said the Defense Department will cooperate with German authorities in their investigation.

“The Defense Department is saddened by the deaths of two of our airmen and the wounding of two others today in Frankfurt, Germany,” he said. “We mourn the loss of our brave service members who were so cruelly gunned down. We pray for their families and the speedy recovery of the wounded. And we will do all we can to help investigators bring to justice those responsible for this cowardly attack.”

“Shooter kills two US airmen in attack on military bus at Frankfurt Airport”

SNIPPET: “Attacker hailed from Kosovo

The interior minister for the state of Hesse, Boris Rhein, confirmed earlier police reports that the presumed shooter had been arrested. Rhein said the suspect was 21, had roots in Kosovo, and lived in the Frankfurt area.”

SNIPPET: “Kosovo’s interior minister, Bajram Rexhepi, said that authorities in Pristina believed they knew the man’s identity, but the government did not confirm this in its official response on Wednesday.

“The government of the Republic of Kosovo is extremely concerned and strongly condemns the killing of two American citizens and the wounding of two others by a citizen from Kosovo that happened today in Germany,” the official statement said.

Early stages of investigation

Police had already announced that they had taken a young man from Kosovo into custody. The assailant had reportedly fled the scene after the attack, but was overpowered and arrested in an airport terminal.”

“’Devout Muslim’ kills two US airmen in Germany”
By BILL ROGGIO
March 2, 2011 6:20 PM

SNIPPET: “AP has more on Uka:

Kosovo Interior Minister Bajram Rexhepi identified the suspect as Arif Uka, a Kosovo citizen from the northern town of Mitrovica.

In Mitrovica, family members identified him as Arid Uka, saying that he was born and educated in Germany where his family moved some 40 years ago.

However, German police said he was born in Kosovo.

An uncle, Rexhep Uka, said the suspect’s grandfather was a religious leader at a mosque in a village near Mitrovica.”

SNIPPET: “The northern town of Mitrovica is best known for the ethnic division between majority ethnic Albanians and minority Serbs. The former mining town has also been the focus of reports that it breeds Islamic extremists.”

SNIPPET: “Also keep in mind that in 2007, German authorities foiled a massive Islamic Jihad Group plot to carry out terror attacks on US military targets at Frankfurt and Ramstein. Two German converts to Islam and a Turkish man were arrested for plotting the attacks.”

SNIPPET: “Kosovan authorities identify suspect as Arif Uka

Uncle says he was a German-born devout Muslim who worked at the airport
Troops had just arrived in Germany from Britain”

SNIPPET: “Officials said the gunman, identified as Arid Uka, 21, shouted out ‘Islamic slogans’ before opening fire.”

SNIPPET: “The attacker, reportedly wielding a knife and a handgun, then boarded the bus and fired at the driver before being taken down by police, the official said.

The suspect’s uncle, 70-year-old Rexhep Uka, said Uka was born and raised in Germany and was a devout Muslim who worked at the airport.

He said Uka’s grandfather was a religious leader at a mosque in the village of Zhabar, near Mitrovica, Kosovo.

Murat Uka, who identified himself as the alleged shooter’s father, says the only thing he knew about his son was that he hadn’t turned up at work on Wednesday.”

ADDING to post no. 63:

07 January 2011
“THAT NETWORK DIAGRAM [TAIMOUR AL-ABDALY, SALAHUDIN IBN JA’FAR, AND SAMIR KHAN]”

SNIPPET: “The second subject, Salahudin Ibn Ja’far, openly identifies with a number of imprisoned or deceased German-nationals involved in terrorist activity, but I have no confirmation that he knew them as well as he and his wife say he did. Ja’far lives in Germany himself, and is married to the American convert to Islam known commonly as “Jihad Kathie” from Indianapolis. What is clear is that Ja’far is strongly linked to those same two YouTube accounts (he was both a friend and a subscriber, the former being a reciprocal relationship). The operator of Mudzahedin23 is a Bosniak claiming to live in Germany, while the operator of isikurdistan has strong connections to Sweden.

Both Taimour and Salahudin are linked to the Samir Khan Network, through two different individuals who are themselves linked to two different subsets of that network.”

The Frankfurt shooter’s Facebook page, and a little color commentary

03 March 2011
“THE FRANKFURT SHOOTER’S FACEBOOK PAGE, AND A LITTLE COLOR COMMENTARY”

SNIIPPET: “The jihadi who shot four US service members in Frankfurt yesterday, killing two, left behind a Facebook account and 127 friends.”

SNIPPET: “His Facebook friends can be broken down into a number of subsets:

• Family, mostly not political
• Friends, mostly not political
• Salafist Islamists, some more political than others
• Jihadis, by definition very political, and inclined towards violence

They can also be broken down by ethnicity: Albanians, Turks, Kurds (who may actually be Turks), Moroccans, and Germans (mostly converts to Islam).”

“Islamic Radicalism Suspected in U.S. Airmen Shooting”

by IPT News • Mar 3, 2011 at 12:41 pm

SNIPPET: “The shooter who killed two United States military personnel in Frankfurt, Germany on Wednesday may have been motivated by Islamic radicalism, according to German prosecutors and an American military official.

“The circumstances raise suspicion that the attack had an Islamic motivation,” the federal prosecutor’s office in Karlsruhe, Germany, said in a statement on Thursday.

“I don’t know if he’s tied to a group,” an American military official said on the condition of anonymity. “But there is enough information at this point to indicate that he identifies with Islamist terrorist ideology.”

German federal prosecutors said Wednesday that it appears the suspect, Arif Uka from Kosovo, acted alone and was radicalized over the last few weeks. Uka was expected to make a court appearance Thursday. Germany’s federal prosecutor is working with Frankfurt and federal police and American authorities.

Boris Rhein, interior minister of the German state of Hesse, said Uka told interrogators his aim was to kill American troops. Uka opened fire after ensuring that the servicemen were American military personnel, Rhein said Thursday.

Previous reports say he boarded a bus filled with U.S. Air Force personnel, asked who they were and shouted “Allahu Akhbar” before opening fire.”

“Fatal Shooting at Frankfurt Airport
German Investigators Suspect Islamist Motives behind Attack”
By Matthias Gebauer and Yassin Musharbash

SNIPPET: “Suspicious Facebook Page

German authorities have found a profile on the social networking site Facebook which they believe could belong to the alleged perpetrator. On the Facebook page, the young man makes little attempt to conceal his Islamist beliefs.

As the motto of his Facebook page, Arid U. has selected a saying by the Muslim conqueror Khalid bin Al Walid, a contemporary of the Prophet Muhammad: “May the eyes of the cowards never sleep.” Among the websites that the man lists as his favorites are some that have clear Islamist leanings, including one called “Rule of Islam.” On his Facebook “wall,” he has linked to a jihadist fighting song, and one of the comments on a friend’s posting refers to “these miserable kuffar (infidels).” The last entry is dated Monday evening.”

The latest information according to Spiegel Online / Alptraum Einzeltäter (roughly translated = Nightmare lone attacker):

The perp had an active jihadistic web presence, but only in the last few months. The Germans are calling this phenomenon "instant jihadism".

German authorities view the phenomenon as quite dangerous. Usually, in monitoring group behavior, authorities can follow up on clues left by the groups activities.

In this case, the perp was motivated to act by a video he had watched the night before about the raping of muslim females. The video was sent to him by a facebook friend.

The perp had led a very unsuspicious life and had in no way appeared on any terror investigator radar screen. Only after the fact could they reverse engineer his increasing jihadistic tendancies over the last few months via his web presence.

The title of the article refers to the nightmare that lone "instant jihadists" presents for the German authorities. There is virtually no way to track them before an attack occurs.

This was the first jihadist attack resulting in deaths for US personnel in Germany. It had been a jihadic goal for quite a while.

This should be a warning for the US. As Col Allen West says, "we must recognize our enemy". It is alarming to me to see that the US MSM isn't devoting much coverage to the attack, especially to the details described above.
