State (CT) Could Require Paid Sick Days
NBC Connecticut ^

Posted on 03/01/2011 3:37:42 PM PST by matt04

Connecticut is likely to be the first state in the country to require paid sick leave for workers in companies that have at least 50 employees, under a bill state legislators expect to enact this year.

For every 40 hours worked, an employee would be entitled to one hour paid sick leave.

Former Gov. M. Jodi Rell vetoed a similar bill, but Gov. Dannel Malloy has said he supports paid sick leave.

A Newington woman said not having sick days almost cost her life.

"I would never take off for work for anything, not even a funeral," said Cheryl Foulston, a former livery driver. "And when I got laid off, I finally went to see a doctor and found I had a big tumor in the middle of my heart."

Supporters of the bill brought her to the legislative office building as an example of someone the paid sick leave act would help. They contend most employers provide benefits more generous than the bill requires.

"They do that not only because they feel it's just the right thing to do," said Jon Green of Working Families. "They also know that providing paid sick leave saves them money. It increases productivity and it reduces employee turnover, which is actually a much more costly drain on the bottom line."

I have clients all over the country.

I will now be advising that they stear clear of doing business in Connecticut, in addition to California.

Connecticut residents will get the government they voted for now.

So how many companies with slightly more than 50 employees will reduce their workforce?

Now there’s a stimulus idea. Take more money from the employer and give it to the idle.

What could possibly go wrong?

>> A Newington woman said not having sick days almost cost her life.

... and here comes the anecdotal tearjerker example as “proof” that the expensive harebrained liberal “want du jour” is ESSENTIAL.

I knew it would be in there somewhere.

Actually...you ought to build a database of every company in Conn...with more than fifty employees and start enticing them to move operations down to Alabama. Once you show the savings....I bet that a hundred companies would make the move.

I agree - as long as all of that money comes from dim-bulb-crats.

LOL Sure why not.
Make it 1 hour sick leave for every hour worked.

Stop pussyfooting around and do it right!
What could go wrong?

Why would you waste your weekend taking care of yourself? Weekends are for FUN! It’s your employer’s job to coddle your butt. Sick time should come out of the employer’s time, and the cost should be on their dime.

Free weekends with no responsibilities are a basic hooman right.

I work for a company of 45,000 employees. Our
comp leave is a mix of sick+vacation time. In my
case, it accrues at the rate of 3.69 hrs for every
40 hours worked. Paid time off that is cashed out
on termination. Max accrual is 380 hrs under 10
yrs service. 480 hrs thereafter. Accruals over max
are paid out in January.

That is exactly right. And, how many companies with 47 employees now planning to hire 5 more will not do so?

How much outsourcing will occur --- to New Jersey or Massachusetts, China, etc.? How many businesses will not be started at all?

I love it when politicians explain to businessmen what's best for their bottom lines. I would think that any regular American should be able to see that politicians just can't know better and should stay away. I guess, I am wrong...

"Wouldn’t that be unexpected?"

Right, along with the mysterious failure of smaller companies to grow to 50 employees or more which will necessitate a funded study followed by a new government program to help such companies.

All businesses there should close and move... let the commies starve... seal their borders... air drop gore into the state and watch it implode.

I caught him Sunday on CNN with Candy Crowley..he was on with my Gov, Rick Scott..Malloy is an idiot, and every time he opened his mouth he confirmed the point..I fell very sorry for CT...the one saving grace being that in 18 months, when the state is in the pits, maybe they’ll elect a conservative Republican to the Senate..one can hope

the parade of victims marches forward.

What they are after is to have time off under the Family Medical Leave Act, be paid time off.

They start with companies with 50 or more, and move it down to everybody.
