Judicial Watch Obtains Previously Redacted Material from the FBI File of the Late Senator Ted Kennedy

While in Santiago, Kennedy “made arrangements to ‘rent’ a brothel for an entire night”; Sought meetings with “communists and others who had left-wing views” Contact Information: Press Office 202-646-5172, ext 305

Washington, DC -- February 25, 2011

Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced today that it has obtained previously redacted material from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) file of the late Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy, who died in August 2009 from brain cancer. Judicial Watch obtained the records pursuant to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit originally filed on June 9, 2010 (Judicial Watch v. FBI (Case No. 10-963)).

The documents include a December 28, 1961, State Department memo describing a tour of several Latin American countries taken by then-Assistant District Attorney of Suffolk County Kennedy. This document as it was originally made public was almost completely redacted. After an initial challenge by Judicial Watch, a version with fewer redactions was released. Judicial Watch continued to argue that the blackouts were baseless and, after six more months, the FBI relented. Among the statements previously withheld but now made available to Judicial Watch:

* “While Kennedy was in Santiago he made arrangements to ‘rent’ a brothel for an entire night. Kennedy allegedly invited one of the Embassy chauffeurs to participate in the night’s activities.” * “[I]n each country Kennedy insisted on interviewing ‘the angry young men’ of the country. He wanted to meet with communists and others who had left-wing views. …Ambassador Freeman, Bogota, said the first person whom Kennedy wanted to meet was Lauchlin Currie.” (The document subsequently identifies Currie as a person who “had been mentioned in Washington investigations of Soviet spy rings.”) * “[I]n Mexico Kennedy asked Ambassador Mann that certain left-wingers be invited to the Embassy residence where interviews could be held. Mann took the strong position that he would not invite such people and stated that if any such interviews were to be conducted, all arrangements should be made by Kennedy himself.”

(Judicial Watch, through separate litigation (Judicial Watch v. FBI (Case No. 10-1568)), also recently forced the FBI to begin the release of the FBI file of the late Ted Stevens, the long-time Republican Senator from Alaska.)

“The FBI’s reluctance to follow the law and release this material shows that it, too, is not above politics. Our tough fight with the Obama administration shows that it was not keen on letting the American people know that Ted Kennedy, one of Obama’s leftist politician heroes, liked to hang out with communists and prostitutes,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “We will continue to investigate why the FBI improperly chose to keep this information secret.”

When will you beasts leave poor Teddy alone? He just wanted to open up the Ted Kennedy Driving and Scuba school. He rented a brothel? He was just trying to take care of the little man. Teddy was always concerned about the little man. Yeah...that is a bad one.

Because the FBI’s willingness to keep files on citizens without any due process or transparency until they pass on is so much better?

J Edgar Hoover’s FBI was one of the biggest government intrusions into the live of American citizens in the country’s history.

This is news? Now, if you can tell me that females were excluded...

By themselves, none of these individual items are surprising. But taken colectively as a whole, they point to an arrogant, narcisist trust fund baby who never believed in the Constitution and country he routinely took an oath to protect.

It’s a wonder he didn’t die from his ding dong rotting off, rather than from brain cancer.
Of course I doubt there was an autopsy, so...?

Interesting information about Lauchlin Currie.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauchlin_Currie

As a naturalized American citizen, Currie served as White House economic adviser to President Franklin Roosevelt during World War II (1939 to 1945).

From 1949 to 1953, he directed a major World Bank mission to Colombia and related studies.

Information from the VENONA project references him in nine partially decrypted cables. He became a Colombian citizen after the United States refused to renew his passport in 1954.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VENONA_project

At Harvard, he earned his Ph.D. in 1931 for a dissertation on banking theory. Paul Sweezy was one of his students in money and banking at Harvard.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Sweezy

(Paul Marlor Sweezy (1910-2004) was a Marxist economist and a founding editor of the magazine Monthly Review.)

In a 1932 Harvard memorandum on anti-depression policy, Currie and fellow instructors Harry Dexter White and Paul T. Ellsworth urged large fiscal deficits coupled with open market operations to expand bank reserves, as well as the lifting of tariffs and the relief of interallied debts.

(Harry Dexter White (1892-1948) was a primary participant in the Bretton Woods conference and the formation of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.)

In 1934, Currie advocated control of the money supply to stabilize income and expenditures. He became a naturalized US citizen, and joined the “freshman brain trust” at the U.S. Treasury where he outlined an ideal monetary system for the United States which included a 100-percent reserve banking plan to strengthen central bank control, and became a top adviser to Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau.

Soon afterwards, Currie drafted the Banking Act of 1935 which reorganized the Federal Reserve and strengthened its powers.

Currie appears to have been involved in carrying out orders from Roosevelt to get U.S. intelligence services to return Soviet cryptographic documents to the Soviet Union and to cease decoding operations.

After the war, Currie was one of those blamed for “losing” China. Elizabeth Bentley, a Soviet espionage agent, claimed that Currie and Harry Dexter White had been part of the Silvermaster ring.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FBI_Silvermaster_File

White and Currie appeared before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in August 1948 to rebut her charges. White died within days, and Currie was not prosecuted and in 1949 he was appointed to head the first of the World Bank’s comprehensive country surveys in Colombia.

In December 1952, Currie gave evidence in New York to a grand jury investigating Owen Lattimore’s role in the publication of secret State Department documents in Amerasia magazine.

However, when Currie, as a U.S. citizen, tried to renew his passport in 1954, he was refused, ostensibly on the grounds that he was now residing abroad and married to a Colombian. However, he may have in fact been identified with the then-secret VENONA project, which had decrypted wartime Soviet cables where Currie was identified as a source of Soviet intelligence. He appears in the VENONA cables under the cover name ‘PAGE’, and in Soviet intelligence archives as ‘VIM’ and an unwitting source for the Golos and Bentley spy networks.

I figured out fifty years ago, that our government was no less a tyranny than any other, they just let us keep more freedom and wealth than the others.

I guess our tyrants, are catching up with the other tyrants.

Fifty or so years ago I figured out that no government has ever existed for the benefit of the people. Government has ALWAYS existed for the benefit of government.

So, Teddy liked to hang out with Communists and whores.

Just sounds like a Kennedy tradition to me.

Government has ALWAYS existed for the benefit of government.

There you go tater, that proves even old farts like me can figure it out. :)

I remember a time when we were truly free, born in a small town in Oklahoma in 1938. We were poor as dirt, but truly free. Most on this forum have never experienced that. No locked doors because people had respect for your property, and every house was armed. Cars with keys left in them never stolen, those were the days for sure.

I learned to kill rabbits, when I was five years old, using a civil war 22 that my grandfather bought for a quarter.
