Graham: Border security must come before other immigration reforms (RINOS TO PUSH AMNESTY) (BARF!)
The San Antonio Express-News ^ | 2011-02-25 | David Hendricks

Stepping up border security must be approved by Congress first before a guest-worker program and a legal status for the 10 million to 12 million undocumented people already living in the United States can be debated, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said in San Antonio on Friday.

“I'm telling you that is a political must,” Graham told moderator Evan Smith, editor-in-chief and CEO of the Texas Tribune, and more than 300 people attending a sold-out San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

Graham, along with U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., last year proposed immigration reform legislation, but the proposals were tabled before serious debate could start.

(snip)

“If we get the border organized, I'll do my part to push for a rational and humane way to deal with the 10 million to 12 million people who are here already,” Graham said.

Not to defend Graham, but what is wrong with this statement?

Do you disagree that borders need to be secured FIRST, before even discussing anything else?

This is what he said:

"Stepping up border security must be approved by Congress first before a guest-worker program and a legal status for the 10 million to 12 million undocumented people already living in the United States can be debated, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said in San Antonio on Friday.

I'll never be in favor of an amnesty until we have a wall 15' high with a moat manned by the National Guard.

Allocate the money then put illegals to building the wall with citizenship for them and/or their kids as the reward.

WE've been fooled before when Congress has passed measures in favor of the wall, only to defund it 3 months later when it was out of the newspapers.

Not this time. A WALL DAMMIT!! A WALL IS SECURITY! A PHYSICAL WALL, not a half-a$$ed virtual wall.

No AMNESTY til that's done!!!

we know where light in the loafers gramnesty and mcamnesty stand, they can talk all they want we know which way they will vote, and thats for amnesty.

We can’t afford and amnesty and its resultant drag on our resources. Mexico has the best economy in 10 years, let them go home along with OTM’s (other than Mexicans).

No debate is necessary, we are broke.

If we didn’t have a Republican governor and state houses along the border with Mexico, the border would already have been declared secured.

McCain would have seen to that.

Didn’t Pelosi already state that the border is safer today than it has been in decades?

that 12 million number hasn't moved in 10 years.
Yet the number of uninsureds keeps rising by the millions.

Exactly. The number must be at least twice that.

This statement on it’s own is not terrible per say, but we ALL KNOW that Lindsey is an Amnesty queen - his statements on this topic are LEGION. Therefore I think it is entirely appropriate to hold this statement up to scrutiny.

NO AMNESTY. There already was an amnesty in the 80’s meant to solve this so we never had to again. Dealing with them humanely means sending every single one of them, including any American citizen dependents they have, back to their home countries to apply for visas like every other law-abiding citizen would have had to do if they wanted to legally immigrate to those countries. That’s more than fair. Operation Paperclip II, 2012, otherwise - no reentry, ever. Citizens in a free country get to decide who else becomes a citizen of that country. NO AMNESTY, not even after the border is secure. How about you deal with us citizens humanely and do that? We are after all your constituents and the voters who are your employers, not just your neighbors and fellow-citizens.

We know the meaning of his statement—he’s pro-amnesty and that’s for approximately 30 million illegal immigrants, not 10-12 million.

the border would already have been declared secured.

Napolitano said the border is secure as it's ever been, which is why Border Patrol is planning a big surge.........

No. You have to do everything you can including defunding any benefits, jobs; etc. while putting up the fence.

Not to defend Graham, but what is wrong with (his) statement?

If negotiating is an essential skill for a politician, then Graham clearly fails. By recognizing legalization as an issue he has included it in the present debate. Indeed, the first point to be negotiated now will be the word "before" in his statement. What possible value is there in including in one's view the opponents favorite issue unless one is willing to recognize it and is prepared to talk about it?

Security and legalization are two separate issues and it is unwise and unnecessary to frame a debate that includes both of them. By doing so he has awkwardly set the table in his opponent's favor.
