(CNN) -- Phyllis Macay wrote of her travels around the world with the breathlessly joyous and staccato style of a teenager.
"I can say that I want to spend a week here ... month here ... maybe a year," she once wrote of visiting Corsica. "It is exciting, vastly busy ... and beautiful at the same time."
That sort of infectious love of adventure, of sailing, of seeing the world was a defining characteristic not only of Macay, but also her companion Bob Riggle and friends Jean and Scott Adam, friends and family say.
All four died early Tuesday off the coast of Somalia at the hands of pirates who had hijacked the Adams' yacht, the Quest.

Jesus was there to greet them in heaven.
A distinction without a difference.
Being Jewish, I have no missionary zeal. But after I’ve learned about this aspect of their travels, my respect to them has increased greatly. Least of all I am tempted to make light of their deaths or think that they were simply careless: they had a job to do.
They have my respect and should have yours. May they RIP.
Sadly, ignorance rules the day. Just see the post following yours, and many above as well, as on other threads. The rule is to first form and opinion (”I am superior to everyone else”) and then, if ever, to inform oneself. The four were nowhere near the Somali coast.
The buck stops on the desks of paralyzed by PC Western leaders who for long have ignored the problem that one and two hundred years ago would have been solved in no time.
Please call the Russian, Indian and Chinese Navies!
Someone already reminded us that you can't fix stupid, so I won't repeat it.
The Somali pirates have been working off the coast of Oman for years.
Learning a bit of geography can avoid a lot of embarrassment.
Go lick your SS jackboots in front of someone else. I’m not impressed, BraindeadCanuck.
My father wasn’t impressed a bit with the reasons Nazis gave for following orders at Nuremburg. But I’m sure an idiot left winger like you celebrates goosesteppers.
I had some friends who cruised their yacht from India to the Suez last year. There are a lot of yachts still making this passage and they do it in convoys. In their case the French navy was watching their group(among a lot of commercial ships). The US MSM is trying to marginalize them because they happened to carry bibles to hand out to Christian communities along the way. Somehow Christian’s are less worthy of protection..along with CIA employees in Pakistan.
I am disappointed in the folks on FR. Maybe we just have too many idiots and trolls now.
I prefer to call it modern Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and, in a sane world, waaaay overdue.
When did "shoot on sight" stop becoming the rational response to piracy? Seriously.
Yeah - and I say foolhardy is stupid... You can’t spread the word of Jesus Christ here on Earth if you’re DEAD...
Those two couples on the yacht are no longer handing out Bibles are they?
One can spread the word of Jesus Christ - hand out Bibles in about 1000 needy places on Earth besides off the coast of Somalia... Muslims don’t want Bibles and see it as an offense to their religion - LET THEM BE ... let them wallow in their ignorance.
Islamic nuts control most if not all of the land of Islam around the world - by direct or implied threat of force... So called ‘moderate’ Muslims do not exist... it is a fantasy that they do exist.
Therefore - Christians offending fundamentalist Muslims are mostly likely to be shot or have their heads cut off...
Plus - they were dealing with PIRATES ... pirates are pirates by definition - they want your money - they will kill for your money - plain and simple.
Stupid is as Stupid does...
There are plenty of people who need salvation right down the American street from these rich evangelists.
They don't want to "save" such local people because they can't use a yacht cruise as an excuse.
As P.J. O'Rourke says, "Everyone wants to save the world but nobody wants to help Mom do the dishes."
Wow, kind of judgmental aren't we? Unless someone knows these people well, such comments are really speculative. Besides; how do you know that they are not also working with their neighbors.
Matthew 28:19-20 references making disciples in the whole world, not just locally. If God called them to do this, who are we to say they shouldn't have gone?
Matthew 28:19-20 (New International Version, ©2010)
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
From a strictly American point of view; we shouldn't have to be afraid to travel on the open ocean anyway.
There is no evidence at all that they were ever distributing bibles in muslim countries.
I thought congress could issue http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letters_of_marque
You cant spread the word of Jesus Christ here on Earth if youre DEAD...
As P.J. O’Rourke says, “Everyone wants to save the world but nobody wants to help Mom do the dishes.”
Some dishes.
I can agree with that... Help and Salvation is needed just down the street... I know deserving families within a few miles of me that could have better benefited from the huge amounts of money tossed away by the well intended yacht people...
Isn't it about time that we break out the daisy cutters and bomb Somali pirate ports to smithereens?
AND spend a lot of time proselytizing other prisoners to convert to Islam.
