NRA issues statement on Grassley ATF inquiry(gunwalker)
Gun Rights Examiner ^ | 12 February, 2011 | David Codrea

The National Rifle Association has weighed in on the unfolding story of a Project Gunrunner operation gone awry. In a February 11 Institute for Legislative Action statement, the association informed its members that “U.S. Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) is calling on the agency to fully respond to his inquiries into the case.”

Per the release:

Senator Grassley has demonstrated that he is determined to uncover the truth regarding BATFE's investigative tactics, even as BATFE seems intent on shutting down his investigation.

NRA is now the fourth and (by far) largest of the national organizations to inform its membership and the public of developments in the ongoing investigation of allegations dubbed “Project Gunwalker” by the investigating citizen journalists who broke this story onto the national scene, Mike Vanderboegh of the Sipsey Street Irregulars blog and this correspondent. Alerts have also been issued by Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, Gun Owners of America and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

Additionally, NRA’s statement bolsters an observation about another ATF-related development that merits consideration by gun rights advocates:

…BATFE's desire to mandate reporting of multiple long gun sales by border area firearms dealers is questionable since BATFE seems incapable of managing the criminal leads it already has…

GOA has gone a step further and urged its members to take this action:

Ask your Representative to urge the Chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee to hold hearings on the ATF. This agency needs to be on top of the Chairman's list of government abuses to investigate. You can click on the Gun Owners Legislative Action Center to send your Representative a pre-written message.

Similarly, CCRKBA tells its supporters:

We are asking our members to call their Senators and encourage them to support Grassley’s inquiry effort, and press for a full Senate investigation…Call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121.

JPFO may not advocate political action due to their status under IRS Code Section 501(c)(3) as a non-profit educational organization.

NRA members interested in seeing their association take a more active advocacy role should contact NRA-ILA at 800-392-8683 and encourage them to issue an additional alert calling on their members to press Congress for hearings.

As usual, NRA is late to the party. We can shortly expect them to begin to claim credit not due them while attempting to manipulate circumstances to reflect better upon their non-action, a la Heller. You read it here first.

What an assinine post!

The NRA gave full credit to the other organizations ahead of them.

Please work on your reading comprehension.

I resigned from the NRA after more than 20 years of membership because they endorsed my opponent in a WV State Senate race ... simply because he was an incumbent. In the old days they would give both of us an A or A+ rating and let the voters decide.

I'll be joining the Gun Owners of America.

Didn’t the NRA support Harry Reid?

The NRA’s K street lobbyists must have figured a fund raising angle on this else they wouldn’t be saying a damned word about it.

‘Senator Grassley has demonstrated that he is determined to uncover the truth regarding BATFE’s investigative tactics, even as BATFE seems intent on shutting down his investigation.’

How has he demonstrated that, lip service? I’ll believe it when the ATF is reined in on a very short leash. In fact what is more likely to occur is the truth will be discovered, guilty will be promoted and the innocent will be let go or side lined. Grassley is the last pol I would expect to want to know the truth. I think he’s just another pol who likes to hear himself talk.

This time and in this moment. It started that way with Heller, too.

Please work on your reading comprehension.

No reading comprehension problem here as I was prognosticating the future and noting that others were doing the heavy lifting while they were working on their latest mass mailing. How's that jerky knee problem???

Didn’t take long for the NRA-bashing crybabies to show up. What a bunch of whining punks.
