Egypt: Hosni Mubarak used last 18 days in power to secure his fortune
UK Telegraph ^ | 2/13/11 | Philip Sherwell & others

Posted on 02/13/2011 2:41:20 AM PST by Daisyjane69

By Philip Sherwell, in New York, Robert Mendick, and Nick Meo in Cairo 8:26PM GMT 12 Feb 2011 The former Egyptian president is accused of amassing a fortune of more than £3 billion - although some suggest it could be as much as £40 billion - during his 30 years in power. It is claimed his wealth was tied up in foreign banks, investments, bullion and properties in London, New York, Paris and Beverly Hills.

In the knowledge his downfall was imminent, Mr Mubarak is understood to have attempted to place his assets out of reach of potential investigators.

On Friday night Swiss authorities announced they were freezing any assets Mubarak and his family may hold in the country's banks while pressure was growing for the UK to do the same. Mr Mubarak has strong connections to London and it is thought many millions of pounds are stashed in the UK.

But a senior Western intelligence source claimed that Mubarak had begun moving his fortune in recent weeks.

"We're aware of some urgent conversations within the Mubarak family about how to save these assets," said the source, "And we think their financial advisers have moved some of the money around. If he had real money in Zurich, it may be gone by now."

Hosni Mubarak, whatever anyone thinks, kept Egyptians safe these past 30 years. He is entitled to recompense, not scorn.

Decades ago, the Egyptian people, spurred on by Imams preaching hate in mosques throughout the country, kept urging war against Israel. If it kept up much longer Egypt wouldn’t have a next generation. (I suspect the Imams were in the pay of Saudi Arabia.)

Anwar Sadat refused to destroy his nation for the political machinations of other nations which never did any fighting against Israel at all! For his resolute opposition to Egypt committing suicide, he was assassinated by the Muslim Brotherhood.

I keep hearing that old refrain from my leftist friends "The Shah of Iran was a repressive dictator". I of course, point out that under the Shah women could drive, work outside the home and wear western dress. Now women in Iran get stoned for showing too much ankle. But the Shah was evil. So tired of leftist illogic.

If he looted the Egyptian Treasury, he should be prosecuted by the new government and placed on the Midnight Express to the general population of an Egyptian prison.

He kept SOME Egyptians safe.

But, if your political views didn’t agree with Hosni’s, like if you were in favor of, um, something like free speech, you weren’t safe at all. Probably same for your family.

Stop covering for a creep. Mubarak was a greedy, repressive head-cracking despot, just like all the others. He had over 1.7 million employees in the Interior Ministry, including 400,000 secret police!! Over 80% of Egypt lives below the poverty line, while a tiny privileged elite shop for imported luxury goods in swank malls. Mubarak deserves no compensation.

Or perhaps you want to tell us also how the Tibetans should be grateful to the Chinese Government for keeping them “safe”?

Now 90% will be below the line. Islamo Liberalism will be a sight to behold. Of course Osamabama will help with some of our tax money so the USA can get poorer and weaker.

The guy gave 30 years of his life to help keep the Middle East (relatively) peaceful, and nearly gave his life several times. He deserves a decent retirement.

But I guess we better all hurry up and make him into a MONSTER, so that the Brotherhood won’t look quite as bad, as they eliminate their “Christian Problem” and take other steps that will even make the Mullahs in Iran cringe.

I am afraid that those Egyptians who fomented and fueled this kerfuffle in their country are sadly misguided. It is my honest belief that the mullahs, from there or somewhere else, will wrest control of that place and their vaunted "freedom" will have been hijacked.

They will at some soon time wish they had Mubarak back. Bet on it.

How does that differ from the world that America's left wants to impose on us? Look at how Obama caters to his commie union buddies. How he includes those that agree with him and excludes everyone else. How the leftwing mainstream media dances in lockstep with the 'rats but does its best to dissuade and degrade the right, while spouting the latest DNC talking points as if they were fact.

We're perhaps not to the level that it was in Egypt yet (if the stories are to be believed), but we're certainly headed that way.

There’s a reason why free speech is first in the Bill of Rights.

The Founding Fathers were geniuses!

The Army and their cronies run the show there. The “election” will be a joke. Osamabama will just redistribute some more of whatever assets we have left. From us to the mob.

Just an old, outdated document according to the Leftists and Obama (their beloved, dear leader). They like free speech when it’s THEIR free speech; but when it’s conservative free speech, they call it “hate speech”.

For everyone’s sake, I hope you’re wrong. We won’t know for some time. *fingers crossed* But I will admit: history is on your side.

One thing I will never, ever, “get” (even if I live to 100 years old) is the greed of these leaders that govern these poor nations. If ANY of the numbers thrown around about Mubarak are true, they’re in the billions. What, one billion isn’t enough? I’m prolly just naive, but how can you enjoy any of that money, when your citizens are so poor, seriously? It’s hard to believe that someone would invest 30 years of their life in something, only for their legacy to be that of pure hatred.

Which is also why I never understood Bernie Madoff, btw.

Sorry SD, I didn’t mean to lash out at you personally, but I feel very strongly that governments have an unspoken responsibility to better the lives of their citizens (or at least try to), not just live the good life themselves — which is part of the problem I have with Obama.

Why is this not the correct thing to do? He should be putting finances in order and making them secure from the blood suckers sure to come looking for them.

I have no idea what the law in Egypt allows for compensation of a president, but I seriously doubt it runs into the billions. Imagine the comments you would see here if it came to light that Obama had amassed a multi-billion dollar personal fortune during his four years in office.
