I remember the woman who was ululating and handing out sweets after 3000 Americans, including children, died on 9/11. When I hear Obama talk about ‘the people’ this comes to mind. The fact is that we are all people, and some of us want to live and let live, while others want to force themselves and their ideology upon us. Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, the ‘majority’ in specific societies or nations want to hurt or destroy others. When this happens, the ‘will of the people’ is not acceptable. It's certainly not a simple matter, but I think it's very simplistic to think that the will of the people is always consistent with what is moral and what is right.

This is at the root of why the Founders created a Republic and not a Democracy.
