Twenty-five persons were injured, including a young woman who had her leg severed, when a cabdriver drove onto a sidewalk and smashed into a crowd in San Diego's Gaslamp District entertainment zone early Saturday, police said.
Twenty-three were taken to hospitals, six reportedly in critical condition. The cabdriver was pulled from his vehicle by the crowd and beaten, suffering a broken nose, police said.
The incident occured about 2 a.m. at 6th and Island avenues, in the heart of the restaurant and nightclub zone, close to the San Diego Convention Center. The cab crashed into a crowd outside the Stingaree nightclub, which was closing, police said.
More than 50 firefighters, paramedics and police responded. A dozen ambulances transported the injured to eight hospitals.
The police said the cabdriver did not appear to be drunk and no explanation for his action was offered. He was described as between 40 and 50 years old and driving an Emerald cab.
The cabdriver was taken to the hospital by police. The cab was going about 15mph, according to Maurice Luque, spokesman for the San Diego Fire Dept.
San Diego police are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call San Diego Crime Stoppers at (858) 540-8477.

One wonders if this might not be a case of Sudden Jihad Syndrome.
I would think either this person went psycho or he was an unhappy Moslem.
Hmmmm, since nothing about the cab driver is mentioned, we must automatically assume that the sub-SAT score “journalists and editors” have made a conscious decision to hide this information.
I strongly suspect a driver following the religion of pieces.
He could also be an illegal alien, but we all know that the authorities in California would never let someone like that become a cabbie. /sarc

Sounds like the cabbie might be a diabetic with extreme low blood sugar. Problem is the hospital, if not the paramedics would have immediately known the problem. 15 mph doesn’t sound like a jihadi oe an anger situation.
In tht case he likly would have “appeared” to be drunk or at least disoriented... which probably would have been reported.

The driver did perform a deliberate attack.
Yes it was right out of the blue like a pitbull.
I hate to imagine 100,000 of these Moslem cabbies suddenly all thinking its time to start running down the non-believers.
Or worse yet the ones driving big rigs, school busses, sanitation trucks, tankers.
They are like a virus, coursing through the veins of this country, waiting to strike.
