Will Mayor Tom Menino save Bostons poorest families from the scourge of . . . everyday low prices?
Yes, the wolves of Wal-Mart are again at the citys door. They want to spend millions building a store, hiring construction workers and creating hundreds of permanent jobs. No wonder the mayor hates them.
Is hate too strong a word? In 2005, Menino told a cheering Labor Day breakfast crowd Wal-Mart shouldnt be in downtown Boston! A year later, after shooting down a Wal-Mart proposal, he claimed there was no place for them here.
Wal-Mart does not suit the clientele we have in the city of Boston, Menino said. I dont need employers like that in our city.
Employers like that. I wonder how those words sound to an unemployed father in Dorchester or Charlestown who has spent months looking for work. I wonder if they can afford to be as picky as our mayor who, instead of welcoming Americas largest private job creator, is hassling them.
Im very concerned about how they treat their employees, Menino told the Herald this week. I want to make sure they are good jobs, that their employees get health insurance, retirement plans all the benefits everyone else gets.
Health insurance and a pension are benefits everyone gets? Spoken like a true City Hall hack.
No, Mayor Menino, most of us in the private sector dont get the kind of benefit packages you hand out to your pals. And unlike the government sector which added employees during this recession the most coveted fringe bene- fit for many private-sector workers is a plain ol job.
Id love to hear the mayor explain to Bostons blue-collar families why...

Doesn’t Wal-Mart recruit illegals and push globalism?
Idiot liberal elected by other idiot liberals.
You KNOW the competitors of Wal-Mart gave envelopes
of unaccountable $$$$$$$$$ to the bizarre-”speaking”
mayor — it is the way of the DNC.
Mumbles Menino!!!!
1) The US has "food deserts" where poor people in inner city areas live far away from supermarkets and do not have access to groceries, or are gouged by local stores that charge high prices.
2) Wal-Mart is bad and must not be allowed to build stores near inner city areas.
I commute from New Hampshire to my job at Hanscom. No way would I ever consider moving to Mass!
Ahhhh, Boston - the city built upon seven hills - where nothing is on the level. As a lifelong resident, that was the very first thought that came to mind.
"put down the rich grab cakes slowly, and no body gets hurt"
With any luck this guy will get Boston in the same shape as Detroit.
I'd like to hear Boston's blue-collar families explain why they continue voting for Democrats.
There was a fellow on Michael Graham’s radio show yesterday (author of the article) who absolutely lambasted Wal-Mart. He had not one good thing to say about them as a company but then confessed that that is where he shops because he gets more for his money.
I want to make sure they are good jobs, that their employees get health insurance, retirement plans all the benefits everyone else gets.
This guy sure uses a lot of words, unnecessary words. Why didn’t he just say what he meant: “I want to make sure they are UNION jobs.”
That is a Boston meme: A previous Boston mayor, Ray Flynn, went
on a possibly alcohol fortified ridiculous spiel about how much a
can of soup costs at a quckie mart v. a supermarket.
Raybo was appointed ambassador to the Vatican by Clinton.
First of all, Wal-Mart is shabby chic.
Second, nobody has any money anymore, so who cares if it "doesn't fit the clientele". Since 0bama has been in, nobody gives a sh*t about that stuff anymore... it's survival mode, baby.
Third, there are almost no 'normal' grocery stores in Boston... you get ripped off by bodegas, Whole Food freakshow stores, and have to go an hour out of town to buy anything in quantity and normal brandage.
And thus is revealed the mentality of the elitist-socialist-fascist. You don't need to decide or have a choice, we, your betters and the elite, will decide what's good for you.
{shudder} What a horrific vision of America. I almost feel sorry for the good people of Boston...but then, you brought this on yourselves.
Wal-Mart does not suit the clientele we have in the city of Boston,
Really??
I’ll bet the urban Blacks along with the poor white folks who work at gas stations, deliver coffee to Starbucks or landscape the fancy Cambridge lawns would LOVE to have a cheap, convenient place to shop.
The mayor is an elitist POS.
Akk! Topless in the meat department ping!
