A survey carried out by the BMJ online found that 72 per cent of respondents believed services will have declined in five years’ time.
Of those, 36 per cent said it would be worse and the same proportion thought it would be much worse.
A further 13 per cent believed health care would be as good as it is now, while only 11 per cent expect it to improve and only 4 per cent of the 1,183 respondents expect it to be much better.
It comes as the Government pushes through the most radical reorganisation of the National Health Service ever attempted, in the face of stiff opposition from medical professional bodies, patients’ groups, charities and think-tanks.
Under the reforms, control of £80billion in funding will be handed from managers to new bodies led by GPs, who can choose whether to buy treatment from state-run hospitals or private providers.
At the same time, the NHS is expected to make £20bn of efficiency savings
