~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri

Fort Leonard Wood is a United States Army installation located in the Missouri Ozarks. The main gate is located on the southern boundary of St. Robert. The post was created in December 1940 and named in honor of General Leonard Wood, former Chief of Staff, in January 1941.

 Originally intended to train infantry troops, in 1941 it became an engineer training post with the creation of the Engineer Replacement Training Center. In 1984, as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process, most of the US Army Engineer School's operations were consolidated at Fort Leonard Wood.

Fort Leonard Wood is home to the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, which was formally activated on October 2, 2008.

The installation has historically had a training role as a TRADOC (Training and Doctrine Command) rather than a FORSCOM (Forces Command) role dating back to its origins in World War II as an engineer replacement training post. However, the 5th Engineer Battalion has been stationed at Fort Leonard Wood for many years and saw action during the First Gulf War.

More recently, as part of a global repositioning of units after the beginning of the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the 94th Engineer Battalion was re-stationed from Germany to the United States and assigned to Fort Leonard Wood.

 Several other units including the 92nd Military Police Battalion, 193rd Brigade Support Battalion, and 94th Signal Company came to Fort Leonard Wood as well. All of these are now part of the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade as a single FORSCOM unit.

Fort Leonard Wood daily trains and supports over 12,400 plus Soldiers, 11,700 plus Family members, six Forces Command units, inactive ready reserves, mobilized and demobilized Soldiers, 31,720 Retirees and their Families; thus maintaining a vital defense force.

Fort Leonard Wood is the only installation in the United States that is the home for three Army Schools (Engineer, Military Police and Chemical) offering "Top Notch" training and it supports the largest Interservice detachments consisting of the Marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. For these reasons - the Installation prides itself as being known as the installation, “World-Class in all We Do.”

Always love the FReeper Canteen, Lauren.

That pic of the guys building the bailey bridge brings back memories. Way back when, we did it without cranes.

Yikes!

REST IN PEACE, FALLEN BROTHER!

Cpl. Richard E. Atkinson, Australian Army, First Combat Engineer Regiment, KIA Afghanistan 2FEB2011

I have fought a good fight,
I have finished my course,
I have kept the faith.
2 Timothy 4:7 (KJV)

God Of Our Fathers

Flowers of the Forest

Rest in Peace, fallen brother, rest in peace!
We who remain hold you in high honor.
Rest, fallen brother, in this sacred precinct;
We who remain keep this place sacred.
Rest, fallen brother, among these, your comrades;
We who remain keep the watch.
Rest, fallen brother, among these who answered the Nation’s call;
We who remain press the fight forward in your name.
Rest, fallen brother, lay down thy burden;
We who remain have taken up the torch.
Rest in Peace, fallen brother, rest in eternal peace!
