Potential GOP Fissures

Republicans look strong each time President Obama assaults the treasury or the democratic process, but people seem more willing to forgive his infractions than they are with other politicians. That, along with the possibility of fissures among conservatives, could make him a formidable candidate for re-election.

It's mystifying that anyone other than pure leftists and those on the public dole could even consider voting for Obama after the way he's governed and behaved in office, but he seems to have nine political lives. It's amazing that he could enjoy high approval ratings while his policies are so unpopular. But so many invested their hope in him to be the man he pretended to be, and they don't want to let it go. The mainstream media are happy to nourish that sentiment, and their job will be even easier if the economy continues to rebound despite Obama's repeated body blows to it.

All of which is to say that Republicans had better bring their best game, both in their governance and in managing the various factions inside their big (and, one hopes, growing) tent. That, I'm afraid, could be easier said than done.

Let me just point out a few problem areas and warning signs for Republicans, not as some ominous foreboding or as a surrender to pessimism, but as potential pitfalls to avoid.

“because there is not a more motivated coalition inside the conservative movement than social conservatives, and they will not tolerate being shunted aside. It’s not negotiable.”

Worth repeating.

It's that protective melanin; it'll do it every time.

The best way to navigate this is to remember what got you here and remember the most pressing issues among these groups.

1. Fiscal - There's hard feelings here thanks to the Bush years. We need to make sure the job is done here. Less government.

2. Social - Fiscal comes first except for two big issues. Life. Firearms. These are the big issues with social conservatives, and they are oftentimes different groups. No gun grabs. Protect life. The others are where we have more fissures.

3. Neoconservatives. We need to back off the nation building. Finish the current jobs overseas, reduce our Europe defensives and get them to defend themselves, and put America first.

The only real fissures in the GOP come from the GOP RINOs trying their best to crap on the conservatives. Put-downs in the media against Palin et al I can deal with; putting RINO idiots on the primary ballot is another thing entirely, and will cause real problems down the road.

Conservatives of all stripes are very close on almost every issue. I think the more difficult bridge is the stylistic differences.

Social conservatives, by and large, believe a conservative philosophy is morally superior to liberalism. They are, by and large, inherently suspicious of elitism, which they associate with self-righteous nanny staters who think they know what’s right for everyone.

Fiscal conservatives, by and large, believe a conservative philosophy is intellectually superior to liberalism. They are, by and large, inherently suspicious of simple, plain-spoken passion, which they associate with ill-informed nanny staters who are guided by ideology instead of logic.

Next time you go to a Republican event, watch how the social and fiscal conservatives don’t talk amongst each other, isolating the RINOs. Instead, the fiscal conservatives gravitate towards the social-issue RINOs and libertarians, because they carry themselves like them, and the social conservatives gravitate towards the fiscal-issue RINOs and Reagan Democrats, because they carry themselves like them.

I think that’s a core reason we keep getting these RINO candidates for nationwide office.
