A PERTH man who mercilessly bashed a Buddhist monk to death in a suburban park could be out of jail in under four years.

Ian Samuel James McConkey, 38, of Coolbellup, was sentenced in the WA Supreme Court today to five and a half years in jail for the manslaughter of Buu "Paul'' Lieu , 48, on January 10 this year.

McConkey, who could not explain why he attacked the defenseless monk, will be eligible for parole after three years and four months.

Mr Lieu died in hospital two weeks after being bashed early in the morning at Bibra Lake Regional Park after going there to meditate.

He suffered four broken ribs, a ruptured liver and a fractured skull, and died after an unsuccessful brain operation.

The West Australian Supreme Court was told that on the night he attacked the monk, McConkey had had an argument with his girlfriend and decided to leave the house and sleep in his car.

He drove to a car park in Bibra Lake, in Perth's south, heavily intoxicated and on amphetamines.

He had been drinking beer during the day and had also consumed a bottle of Jack Daniels whisky.

Mr Lieu had been meditating at Bibra Lake Regional Park and had approached McConkey in his car, waking him.

The court heard McConkey became angry and started to beat his victim.

Monk kicked and stomped on the chest

Mr Lieu was kicked and had his chest stomped on during the unprovoked attack.

He was left shaking and bleeding on the ground as McConkey drove home. ...

Another example of lenient sentencing. The monk went to the park very early before dawn, in order to meditate.

A 5.5 year sentence, eligible for parole in under 3.5 years.

Apparently, the crime wasn't that bad.

Not too bad at all ... Only the brutal killing of a defenseless middle-aged man who was a cleric. I can’t understand the legal system.

I’ve always felt that murder charges are bass ackwards. First degree murder is usually a planned murder. Murders by impulse are lower on the punishment scale. Yet who is more likely to commit more murders? Some guy who plans and carries out the murder of a punk who killed his daughter? Or some vicious bully who beats someone to death because he was pi$$ed off?

The impulse murderer is the one who should be executed as a higher priority.

Well-said. LEGAL system, not JUSTICE system.
