This is the criteria that the old military used in selecting a model to best protect their commanders. They chose the Colt model 1911 hands down. It's very design and function left no competitors standing.
The Glock is a fine pistol for target practice and home protection, provided it is kept clean. But in the combat world, it still falls short.

What were the other choices 100 years ago? Specifically regarding semi-auto pistols?
For the past 3 decades just about every military and law enforcement agency in the world has chosen some other pistol than the 1911 and some other caliber than .45 ACP.
I will only carry a 1911.It has stood the test of time.
I like 1911s, but have to chime in about Glocks. They are probably the least picky guns when it comes to being clean. I have four (2 in .45, and 2 in 9mm), and never have had a single malfunction out of any of them. In simplicity and ruggedness, they're like the AK47 of the handgun world.
