EL PASO, Texas (AFP) – The United States deported more illegal immigrants than ever before during the first two years of President Barack Obama's administration, his government said Monday.
"In both fiscal years 2009 and 2010, Immigration and Customs Enforcement removed more illegal immigrants from our country than ever before, with more than 779,000 removals nationwide in the last two years," Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said.
The Obama administration must prove it is tough on illegal immigrants and can secure the country's porous borders if it is to stand a chance of passing a comprehensive overhaul of America's tattered immigration system.
Napolitano announced the record figures in El Paso, Texas -- the border city which is the focus of a major drive by the administration to stem the tide of illegal immigrants flowing over the border from Mexico.
"We have strengthened the southwest border in a way that many would not have thought possible," she said. "This approach focuses on identifying criminal aliens and those who pose the greatest risk to our communities, and prioritizing them for removal."
Napolitano highlighted huge increases in the number of border patrol agents, immigration and customs officers and intelligence personnel working on the US-Mexico border, but also said there were, "long-standing, systemic problems with our immigration laws."
The so-called DREAM Act, which would have offered a path to citizenship to young undocumented immigrants who attend college or join the military, fell short in December of the 60 votes needed to advance through the Senate.
Obama dubbed its failure his "biggest disappointment" and insisted he was "persistent" and "determined" to overhaul a system which has left some 11 million undocumented people residing in the United States.
Opposition Republicans said the DREAM act amounted to an "amnesty" for illegal immigrants.

If we have 12 million illegals, as they say, these 2year numbers are astounding.
Did not make a dent, wonder how many of those were double and triple counted. By the way how many jobs did the stimulus create and how many hundred thousand was spent for each one.

Sounds like baby-steps in the right direction. Now, no more of these ‘deported 17 times but kept returning until caught this time raping and killing a neighbor’s daughter’ types. Keep them out, once put out. Enforce the border. Deport all illegals - and any of their ‘traumatized’ supporters.
This is the first I've seen this usage in respect of an American president. Sounds a little creepy. Perhaps the editor was thinking of Obama’s czars .... or is it tsars?
We already gave them an amnesty under Reagan, and that was supposed to put an end to ‘good’ illegal aliens being ‘stuck’ here ‘without documentation’ (quote marks were on sale, and not a moment too soon).
Getting rid of all the potential successful ones before granting amnesty. Can’t have the non welfare ones voting in next election.
Get them out of my country. They are illegal and put people who hire them in prison.
In other words, you pretty much have to commit a crime to get deported. And then it's a revolving door.
It's probably 10 criminals deported 77,900 times each.

They certainly haven’t removed them from NJ; I call BS as well.
I can tell you this, in Texas they are breeding faster than rabbits. By the time they remove a hundred, another 300 are born. And that's no lie.
It isn’t all lies but it isn’t Obama’s doing either. The individual states are forcing the Federal government to do something about it.
It is also true that the border is less porous than it has been in my 57 years and that is thanks to Bush.
Far too few deportations to keep up with the influx. Just maybe it might make more sense to actually secure our border??
Ooops I forgot. The Obama fascists do not operate on what makes sense. They have another agenda.
