An era of cheap food may be drawing to a close

U.S. grain prices should stay unrelentingly high this year, according to a Reuters poll, the latest sign that the era of cheap food has come to an end.

U.S. corn, soybeans and wheat prices -- which surged by as much has 50 percent last year and hit their highest levels since mid-2008 -- will dip by at most 5 percent by the end of 2011, according to the poll of 16 analysts.

The forecasts suggest no quick relief for nations bedeviled by record high food costs that have stoked civil unrest. It means any extreme weather event in a grains-producing part of the world could send prices soaring further.

The expectations may also strengthen importers' resolve to build bigger inventories after a year in which stocks of corn and soybeans in the United States -- the world's top exporter -- dwindled to their lowest level in decades.

I guess this is more of that 'Change you can believe in'. You know that the rest of the world will ultimately blame the USA for high food prices.

I despise the democrats. Every time they gain power the whole world goes to hell.

Obama has brought nothing but misery. No one is left untouched.

Because we no longer have cheap energy. Energy costs run thru everything. Drill for oil, exploit the Marsellus shales for natural gas, mine coal, build nuclear plants - in short get off our dead tocuses and get to work. Throw the bums out. California is a particularly good example.

Food priced in US$ will be more expensive for importers.

But what about food priced in Brazilian Reals or Au$?

I think they will have a competitive advantage until sold out

Exactly. Every problem we have today is a result of bad policy.

Alter or abolish it.

It also doesn't help that 0bama is letting the Fed print money like there's no tomorrow.

Exactly.

ATTN WASHINGTON DC: QUIT BURNING FOOD! QUIT SUBSIDIZING AND MANDATING THE BURNING OF FOOD!

How hard is this?

This is absolutely a component to what is happening in Egypt. The man in the street is hungry, food prices are killing the poor in the 3rd world, literally. Our absurd ethanol policies are part of the problem here.

Another component is poor harvests in Russia, where they stopped all grain exports last Summer/Fall. Egypt typically imports a lot of wheat from Russia.

Yeah, as we burn most of the world’s corn for engine destroying, utterly fake climate enhancing ethanol.

Due to a stupid energy policy along with an insane amount of inflation that’s about to hit, the days of cheap food will come to an end for the working folks.

The elitists of the nation like the Obama’s etc will still continue to dine in luxury while lecturing to the public about the so-called obesity problem plaguing our nation.
