The Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's venerable and controversial Islamic organization, says it has backed Mohamed ElBaradei as the lead spokesman for the country's opposition groups to negotiate further political reforms with the shaky Egyptian government.

The development marks the latest step by the Brotherhood to subordinate its religious goals to what opposition groups are describing as a battle for democracy, in a country run under a state of emergency by President Hosni Mubarak for more than 30 years. It also suggests that the group's once sidelined moderate wing is regaining strength at a time when the movement could emerge as a significant political actor in Egyptian politics.

They will be "moderate" all the way until they take power. El Baradei is just their tool. Looks like Egypt will be ruled by Islamists, just like Iran.

An uprising from within the center of power clearly indicates that a powerful faction from within the leadership is either guiding or managing the outbreak. The Army. It isn’t a revolution but a war of succession.

There are four key players — Lt Gen Sami Annan, Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Army, Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi, Defence Minister, Air Marshal Ahmed Shafiq, Minister for Civil Aviation, and Lt Gen Omar Suleiman, the intelligence chief. Of the four, Lt Gen Annan commands 468,000 troops, Field Marshal Tantawi oversees 60,000 Republican Guards while Lt Gen Suleiman is rumoured to be ailing.

As soon as Mubarak is gone a coalition government backed by the Army and including the Muslim Brotherhood and headed by El Baradei will take over. The MB and the Army have cut a deal that MB will not provide arms to the protesters or allow in foreign fighters. The theme on the streets is not a call for democracy, just that Mubarak go. The Army did not want to see Mubarak's son Gamal take power, and saw the unrest in Tunisia as a cover opportunity for, what are, contrived protests.

What is odd is that the protesters have no weapons and that there is so much collaboration with the protesters, from the beginning, and no shoot-to-kill orders were ever given. Also, very odd that the police would disappear en masse, on cue. That could only happen by orders from the Army.

Also, we know that the internet and cell phone shut down was ordered about 8 hours before the first protest. Very odd. It all looks very staged. Finally, for a 6 day revolution, there are far too few casualties. There is a lot of restraint here, on both sides, very odd.

You may recall that El Baradei pulled a mini Dan Rather on W right before the ‘04 election to try and throw it to Kerry. The man is NOT trustworthy at all.

The protests looked like it was straight out of the Saul Alinsky (American Liberal) playbook. Riot gear on police, dirtbags throwing the gas canisters back, effigies burned, rhetoric shouted, flags trampled. Now a new phase has kicked in and people are actually getting hurt or killed in high numbers.
