Furor at Washington U. nixes Bristol Palin appearance
St Louis Post-Dispatch ^ | january 28, 2011 | ELIZABETHE HOLLAND

Anger over a decision to pay Bristol Palin several thousand dollars in student fees to talk to Washington University students about abstinence led to a decision Thursday night to nix Palin's appearance on a panel here next month.

Washington University's Student Health Advisory Committee had extended an invitation to Palin, a spokeswoman to prevent teen pregnancy, to speak on abstinence as part of the university's Student Sexual Responsibility Week.

But because of a growing controversy among undergraduates over the decision to pay for her talk with student-generated funds, the advisory committee and Palin decided Thursday night "that the message that they intended on sharing would be overshadowed by controversy," according to a university statement.

Scott Elman, president of the advisory committee, said the decision to halt Palin's appearance as a keynote speaker was "100 percent mutual" between Palin and the committee. Elman added that he was very disappointed that students weren't more open to having Palin speak.

Palin - the daughter of Sarah Palin, former GOP vice presidential candidate - became pregnant at 17 and is a single mom to a 2-year-old boy.

The university's Student Union Treasury earlier this week approved spending $20,000 to sponsor a panel featuring Palin. Student government sources said they were asked not to divulge Palin's fee, but said it would have been $15,000 to $30,000.

I’ll wager you they’d have no problem with paying Ted Bundy to discuss child rape.

Heh, heh, there they go again. It’s just college students showing their Liberal tolerance for diversity of opinion. NOT!

I would hazard a guess that it was not the students (i.e., “undergraduates”) that had a problem with Bristol appearing; rather, it was the administration, faculty, and staff of the university.

Can’t deviate from the party line, y’know.

I’ve got no problem with Bristol Palin.

I do have a problem with the kind of “student fees” behind this fiasco - they’re routinely assessed of all students across the board at most universities, and then “student activity boards” (run by typical student government-type tools) and / or administrative committees dole out the accumulated money to all sorts of speakers and entertainers, as well as favored student activity groups.

If you’re a student, you’re generally forced to pay for this stuff, even if you think it’s mostly crap (which it often is). Let the lousy student organizations collect money from their own members, invite whom they please, and leave everybody else alone.

Hey, let them do what they want, after their splendid education, they will be equipped for nothing more meaningful, monstly, then applying for food stamps. They can then chat amongst themselves on the net about how smart they are and tolerent too.

I’ll bet they have spent student fees on a lot worse items than a Bristol Palin speech...

This isn't a matter of censorship like the David Horowitz/Ann Coulter issues.

I got to question the wisdom of paying Bristol Palin $20 G to talk about teen pregnancy.

What's she going to say? Don't have a baby out-of-wedlock as a teenager or you will have to take a $20 G an hour job telling college kids not to have babies out of wedlock as teenagers?

I was thinking the same thing. How do you promote abstinence when getting preggers has rewarded you with DWTS, a radio job and a house.

It would have been a plus had she asked for travel expenses only and went and talked.

They probably would have tossed pies at her anyway.

I guess I could handle few pies in the face for a nice paycheck like that though. LOL

College costs could be lowered by eliminating fluff like student activity fees. If a group wants to bring Bristol to campus, it should raise its own money to do so.
