BEIRUT Religious cleansing, genocide and outright extermination are terms now used to describe the plight of Christians in the Middle East, particularly following recent horrific attacks on Christians in Iraq and Egypt.
While attacks on Christians in the Middle East are nothing new, the situation has escalated.
There was the Oct. 31 massacre in Baghdads Syriac Catholic Church of Our Lady of Salvation, for example, which killed 58 people, including two priests, and wounded 75.
Then, on Jan. 1, an attack on the Orthodox Coptic Church of the Saints in Alexandria, Egypt, killed 21 people and wounded more than 100.
Christians are scared and are continuing to leave, said Chaldean Catholic Archbishop Louis Sako of Kirkuk, Iraq. They want to educate their children with security, he said, noting that even when their children are in school, parents are afraid about their safety. They are very worried about their future.
While there are Christians who want to stay in Iraq, the bishop said, they are feeling more vulnerable and afraid with each day and want to flee their homeland.
It is estimated that about half of Iraqs approximately 1.4 million Christians have fled the country since the American invasion in 2003. The exodus has brought hundreds of thousands to neighboring Syria, Jordan and Lebanon, and most recently Turkey.

France, which has had a historic interest in interaction with the Middle East dating back to the Middle Ages and the Ottoman Empire, was explicit in its condemnation of the Egypt attack.
We cannot accept and thereby facilitate what looks more and more like a particularly perverse program of cleansing in the Middle East, religious cleansing, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said in a Jan. 7 annual address to religious leaders.

Never catch Obama saying this...pretty sad.
Where are the UN human rights watchdogs? The OIC told them to stay home?
Gallic ping.
psssh, The UN is muslim now or at the very least, muslims have most favored religion status.
At least Sarkozy shows some nads-—Obama last night...
“And as extremists try to inspire acts of violence within our borders, we are responding with the strength of our communities, with respect for the rule of law, and with the conviction that American Muslims are a part of our American family.”
Yeah, but the liberal world doesn’t care. They hate Christianity because it’s at the basis of Western Civilization, which they want to tear down and replace with a Progressive Paradise.
The “progressives” are unwittingly taking all to the crossroads of Islam...
If they get their way, we’ll be walking through the door and get welcomed to the third world.....and a caliphate.
First, they came for the Jews.
The UN is fake.
Our participation in it is treason of the highest order.
Why we won’t abandon and expel this corrupt, evil , anti-American organization is beyond me.
It’s probably another “reason us commoners could never possibly understand unless we were in the Skull and Bones club, etc etc etc”
We need a really big clean slate wipe. They all hide behind mass confusion and “too much data” for any and all policy, spending, agreements or deals cut.
If we don’t wipe it clean, then that will always be the excuse of “terrible unintended consequences” or “but if we stop paying the Saudis to finance attacks against us, we’ll have no oil and there will be mass riots here etc”
Well I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’d take the social unrest at home over furthering this massive tangled web of terrible policy and back scratching across the world.
Thanks for the Ping. I posted this story in early January. Not much interest at all.
Sarko is tough on these kinds of issues, but naive & weak on others.
I do wish he would stop military equip sales to Russia. They are still a danger to the US & Europe. Their cozy relationship with Iran is troubling.
