Republican Rep. Dan Lungren is using the power of his new leadership post to throw out a composting initiative started under former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's watch.
Lungren, named chairman of the Committee on House Administration after Republicans gained control of the House last November, announced this week that he has asked the House Chief Administrative Officer to halt the waste disposal program, citing increased costs and unrealized energy savings.
The program, part of the past Democratic leadership's "Green the Capitol" push, put compostable trays and utensils in House dining facilities in an effort to reduce landfill-bound waste.
But the Gold River Republican issued a press release saying that a review concluded the program wasn't making a big enough mark to merit its $475,000-a-year price tag. He also cited a report finding increased "energy consumption through the use of additional electricity for the pulping process and the increased hauling distance to the composting facility."

Polar Bears will suffer now
Make capitol hill a food free zone.
How the hell do you drop half a mil a year on composting? Even if they had a brand new bin for every week of the year, the really nice ones only run about $200 (mine was $50 at Lowe’s), so that would be 10K. Were they paying somebody 400K+ to spin them? I’ll take that job.
Doesn’t he love Mother Gaia? Think of the children and the penguins!!
“Had enough of this S***!”
Do you want to ping the list? I am genuinely curious as to how they frittered away that cash and maybe one of us will have a clue.
You are not taking into account the whips they had to buy to force the House food services staff and customers to comply with her orders. Also, the program had its own media representative!
What are they composting? Dollar bills?
What are the chances that at least one union wasn’t involved?
WTF?
Whatever happened to RE-USABLE trays and utensils ?
They have to WASH those.

You do it by buying super expensive disposable forks and plates.. Anyone with half a brain would have bought real silverware and china or continued using plastic utensils and paper plates and incinerated them .. if you want to feel good about “helping the environment” then heat water or something with the incinerator.
Dan Lungren has always seemed like a really good guy, but I’ll never understand how he ran such an uninspiring campaign for Governor, getting his clock cleaned by that wet rag Gray Davis.
Yeah, that washing thing doesn't work anymore now that we can't use phosphates.
I’m actually planning to use the compostable stuff for my 4th of July party, but I’m going to carry it up the hill to my bin for free. Probably the cost difference between the disposables I’ve gotten in the past and this stuff (I think they make it out of sugarcane) is $5.

Actually, you’re kinda right. Dollar bills have a very short life span. About 18 months. Then they are shredded, and composted. That’s why I advocate the use of dollar coins, which last many, many years. And it’s fun to use them at stores where there are kids as cashiers. They looked puzzled when you hand them a few coins for to pay for your burger! It’s fun. I’ve been trying to get some 2 dollar bills for the same reason, but my bank never has any!
