KABUL, Afghanistan (Jan. 22, 2011) — Coalition forces targeted the Taliban shadow district governor for Hisarak, Laghman province, killing more than 10 insurgents with two precision air strikes in the province yesterday.
The targeted Taliban shadow district leader conducted attacks against Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan officials and coalition forces. He poses a threat to the security of Afghan officials and coalition forces in Hisarak and Sherzad districts. According to recent reporting he has acquired improvised explosive device material, machine guns and rockets for future attacks.
Multiple armed insurgents, including the targeted Taliban leader, were identified in a remote mountain area of Hisarak district. After determining there were no civilians present, an air strike was called in to engage the group. The air strike resulted in several insurgents being killed.
Several hours later, multiple armed insurgents were identified in the same location. After determining there were no civilians present, a second air strike was called in to engage the group. The air strike resulted in numerous insurgents being killed.
The International Security Assistance Force is still gathering information to confirm if the targeted individual was one of the insurgents who was killed in the strikes.
